Growth Ruler - Finish Question

I have a live edge piece of cedar that I am making a growth ruler out of to go in the children's play room. I do not plan to stain at this time. I have a Fuji MM4 so I would like to try to spray the finish. I would like a matte finish. My wife would like to be able to write on it with a sharpie or a sharpie paint pen. What finish would you recommend?

Seeing as you're using a Shrpie, are these marks to be permanent?

My first inclining for this application is a few coats of oil.

Yes, the marks will be permanent showing where the kids are height wise as different ages. We thought a sharpie fine point would be best. But, I am open to suggestions there as well.

The Sharpie wll be just fine for what you want to do. I suggest a different color Sharpie for each child.

In this case I would apply 3 coats of finishing oil. Do a sample  piece, but I believe the oil will give you the sheen you desire.

After the childern are grown and gone, you could seal this for prosparity with a spary on finish. Not sure what we'll have in 20 years, so ask me then.....(if I don't answer [scared] well....I'm old already.... [big grin])

Any particular finishing oil? Also would you spray it?

I can only hope that I am still here in 20 years assuming the kids or wife don’t kill me before then. Thank you very much for the help!

I use Surfix due to its ease of application. It is hand applied.

Others here like Osmos.

If you really want to spray it, Zar UltraMax oil modified. Get their dullest sheen.

If you use the Surfix HD oil, it calls for 2 coats, on the cedar I'd use 3 coats.
