guess what I just finished building ???

you guessed it, I think  yep another built-in.  this is the 6th one in this neighborhood.  I started this one on tuesday and I finished it today.. My painter came and painted it today, while I did the trim and other stuff that had to be finished.  all built on site.  using the festool system

I used sherwin williams creamy color paint, semi gloss, called downey.. great creamy color.

I did a new design on the corners of each upper unit.  I made a 1/2 key basically and  bumped out the crown around it.  looks really cool.   I also enlarged their mantel and added a beaded trim piece around the edge, the same edge I put on the lower cabinets edge so it would tie all together.

I made the doors  using the rockler door bit set.

I use birch ply and popular for trim pieces.. I made 4" styles on each ends of the bookcase with a 5 flute detail  and the center style I made 3"  with 3 flute detail.. unusual.. but some and I....

enjoy.

Very nice - the crown, curved top detail, and lighting really got my attention. Side note: last winter we put a wide screen like that above our fireplace but it gets too hot to make a fire. Maybe if I inset the TV in the wall?

vinny,  don't know about the shoe  most hardwood floors have the shoe stained then the white baseboard.  so I have to continue the shoe as it is all over the room.

Maybe someone can explaine this to me,but why do people mount their tv's so high on the wall?
Is it really comfortable when you are sitting down to keep looking up?

usually you put it on a tilt stand and then it is fine to watch...  and i guess in most houses the fireplace area is a focal point in the house.  don't ask me... I just hang um where they want them and because of all the flat screens it what keeps me busy...

and because I am busy and buy festools... it makes festool happy.

and when festool is happy in the us then festool in germany is happy

and when festool germany is happy maybe they will forget how stupid we made them look in Hogans Hereos !!!!!  lol  tv show back in the 70's for all you youngens

You're absolutely right in questioning this typical placement.  I just mount them in the fireplace and have them put a yuletide log dvd on, for effect.

I like this one better than the last 2 with lights mounted on them. These seem to look like they belong or have been there from the beginning.

When watching movies the tv should be about center with your eyes when sitting. Distance depends on screen size, a 40" should be about 6'-7' away and a 70" 3D (Picking mine up today  [big grin] ) should be about 7'-9'. Doesn't sound like much distance but for optimal theatre effects this is what is recommended on audiophile sites.

I had mine above the fire place for a few months when I first got it, got tired of looking up. A fireplace should be the focal point in the room on that wall and the tv elsewhere. Just my opinion and 2 cents.

I hate what you Americans call a ''shoe trim''      I always recommend to the client to remove the skirting (baseboard) and put new or put old back on again if I was able to remove it with out damage OR if they dont want that cus they dont want mess and damage it could cause to the walls,  I would suggest to cut the bottom of the skirting of so I can slide the skirting underneath.  BUT some clients still insist on this ''shoe trim''  oh well I dont like it but if thats what the clients want!

Spit my drink out on that one... seriously the Mike Holmes shrine has been good to go for a while. This built-in is to hold my official autographed beadboard and slightly used bandana that I bought from a fan site. I'm sure it's legit! [eek]

It looks like you put a filler and painted it white?
Those little areas can be tricky to deal with.

I'm with you JMB.  I generally dislike shoe molding, and see it as a lazy way out of scribing the base molding to the floor.  In this case, it looks nice as it ties in with the rest of the room.  Luckily I work with a designer that dislikes it as much as I do, and I haven't installed show molding in any kitchen or bath in years.

Nice work Kreg, you're inspiring and make me feel lazy sometimes!  Keep it up.

Tim. I made the base cab 6" shorter and added a filler right behind the window then notched the top out and done deal. I have a picture I will post when I get home from my laptop. I am on my iPad and will soon be switching to iPhone.  Lol. I I I.    !!!

tim here is the picture of how I went around the window.. i built this bottom cab 6" shorter and then put a board on the side and then cut the top etc...
