I agree.  The felt or leather liner in the upper tray is a really nice touch too.

I have been thinking about using strategically placed magnets for smaller or awkward things.

I have used some some rare earth magnets inset into the plywood to keep my metal ruler and combination square exactly in place so that they neither rattle nor interfere with the other tightly packed components.

I also liked wooden pivoting/collapsing handle above as well.

Thanks the leather handle is a nice touch I'll admit but it came out of a need rather than aesthetic, it needed to be collapsible and hard wearing and leather seemed the obvious choice.

Also used rare earth magnets to hold rulers etc in position on the side....
