Help please from a Pro painter

Well this project was put on hold for a little while.  But it's back on track know and time to get serious.

I bought some small sample pieces of wood to show my Mother.  Out of Maple, Cherry, Oak, Birch, Hickory and Mahogany

My Mother has chosen the Mahogany, African Mahogany to be exact.

I bought pre finished Maple plywood.  What's the only way to go IMO.  So all the ply 5mm, 12mm and 19mm is all pre finished.

And I bought a couple sheets of African Mahogany plywood 5mm thick for the cabinet skins to put over the exposed sides of the cabinets at the

ends of the runs.

This is what 25 sheets of plywood and 210 board feet of African Mahogany looked like this morning in my truck.  Man I love having a truck!

I gave my Mother a book that had a lot of styles of doors and drawer fronts.  So I only have a picture to go off of.  This is the door she has

chosen.

So now I have to buy the poly that I plan on using.  I have until March 15 to build the cabinets.  So I'm gonna poke at them on the weekends.

I'm thinking about recording the process for some more Youtube videos.....so  keep on eye out for that.  [wink]

Thanks for all the help with the poly questions guys!

I'll keep you updated with some before and after photos in a few month when I get the project done.

Eric, with that profile, why aren't you mitering the rails and stiles?

Weird.  I look at that and think, "someone messed up."  You should put together a mitered door with that stock to see what she thinks.

It does looks weird but I guess it will be easy to put together

Did you make that one or buy it?
Some interesting finishing challenges. The corners of the horizontal flutes will catch a lot of finish.

Tim,  I made that door as a sample door for my Mom to see.

I'm gonna have to practice my spraying technique, no doubt about that.  My plan is to spray the doors laying flat with some lite ghost passes and slowly build up the poly.  I'll make a couple drying racks also.   Building the cabinets and doors/drawers will be the easy part.  The challenging part for me will be taking my time finishing the cabinets.  Sometimes I can get a little crazy with the trigger on the spray gun   [huh].

Eric

Eric,

To lite of a coat and the open time will not be long enough for the finish to flow out. You'll be sanding 320 paper with the finish instead of the other way around.

Build the drying racks as laminated posts. 3/4" full height side, 4" x  3/4" spacer spaced vertically 3/4", 3/4" full height side. 1/2" EMT slides into the 3/4x3/4 space. I'll post some pics, the base has 4 casters.

Tom

Eric,

Sorry to add yet another comment about the door design, but I think that style is designed more for a wall of cabinet doors where the line flows from one door down to the next continuously, such as four or five doors one on top of each other. I think it would look strange on a single door.

Also, think about how the door meets the countertop. You won't have a flush edge.

Richard.

Nice rack  ;D

Thanks for the feed back on the door design guys.  I'll make another door with miter corners.  And see what the boss thinks.  It's great to get some professional feed back on how it should look.  [thanks]

The Domino will make quick work of the miters  [wink].

Tom,  Thanks for sharing the pick of your "rack"  [tongue].  I'll copy what you've done.  Looks like a nice set up.  [thumbs up]

Eric

The main advantage to the rack design is, if you need more space between the stickers, just slide the ones in the way out of the rack. The spacers are cut at 2°.

Tom

When finishing African Mahogany please make sure you do several test samples with the full finishing schedule and check it in as many of the light conditions as you can. You might find that using a clear poly will not be your first choice. The bluish cast that a WB clear poly like EM9000 gives off has a tendency not to mesh well with reddish toned woods like Mahogany. One suggestion I will give you is to try a finish with a thin base coat of 2LB amber shellac or Zinnser sealcoat and 2 to 3 topcoats of Target EM2000 or General Endurovar. I have used this combination a lot and it brings out the warm tones of reddish woods and is extremely durable.

WOW….this is a little freaky.  I just came home from having dinner with my mom and step dad.  They came over today so we could talk about the door style that she picked.

Well she is hell bent on having the profile that she selected in the photos I posted earlier.  But when I was drawing up the drawer fronts I realized that the raised panel for the drawer

fronts would be way to small and would look like crap.  She and my step dad came over so I could show them exactly what the problem was.

I asked her to consider selecting another style of door…..but no….she wants the doors she selected to begin with. I showed her the mitered door with the same profile.  I got a quick "NO".

The doors will not change…. I just need to figure out the best look for the drawer fronts.

So now I'm going to make up two new different drawer fronts for her to choose from.  In order to keep the profile that she likes I'm going to decrease the width of the rails on the drawer

fronts to make for a bigger center panel.  Also, I'm going to make the overall drawer fronts bigger by at lease 50mm.  Changing the reveal around the face frames…..I tried to explain

to my parents how the cabinets would have 38mm spacing between the drawer and doors, while keeping the edges of the drawer and doors 38mm from the sides of the face frame,

but my step dad didn't care if the distance between the drawer and doors wasn't the same around the whole cabinet…….SO that's what I'm dealing with.

I know it's my parents but now I guess the time where they start driving me crazy happens  [unsure]  [scared]

And another thing……at first my mom wanted semi-gloss poly applied to the cabinets…….but I wanted a gloss, I think it looks better and cleans up better.

So after showing her a test piece of Mahogany with semi-gloos and gloss applied on it……well now she doesn't know which one she wants…..and she'll get back to me with her choice.  [mad]

It's a good thing I only bought a little can of poly for the test pieces.

I have a lot of respect for all you contractors who have to deal with clients everyday.

At lease I got a good BBQ dinner and a couple beers to deal with the headache !    [wink]

Maybe the timing was a bit uncanny, but it was just the next step in your cabinet making process so that's why I asked.

Luckily we are not dealing with our parents everyday as we would surely get the same treatment.

I have been watching the whole series, and now I must say, I agree, mitered doors are ghetto. Go shaker style and simple. Your function and aesthetics will shine. This is the moment where you define taste. Can't wait! (pm me if I can be of any assistance)  [big grin]

And on the racks, for crying out load its not 1990 anymore. Yes, even I cling to my old 2x4 Frankenstein meets George Foreman racks, but Erecta Rack is the long term solution to the racking problem. [attachimg=#]
