Hi All,

The house we bought has a few sliding doors. A few op them (inside and outside) are pretty damaged by scratches of cats (and a dog)  :o  For some its on the door (can be removed) others have it on the window (fixed). See pictures below for some of the damage.

We want to change the color anyway (probably white-ish), so needs to be sanded.

What would be the best approach to repair these scratches? With the current color you can still see some of the grain. If you just put some filler on it, I'm afraid you will definitely 'remove' the grain.

Any idea what would be the best way to approach this 'restoration' ? The kit is also pretty yellow (guess from the sun), is that something I can replace myself?

Also open for a FT sander suggestion

Thanks!

Hi!

The condition shown in the first picture is pretty severe. With regular filler, if you want the grain to show after sanding and re-finishing - from my experience that is definitely going to show. If you can't replace, then filler and paint, loose the grain.

The others appear to be not as severe, regular filler might work without standing out too much after finish.

I use this as my regular/ go to filler:https://www.jansen.de/en/products/fillers/ahrweitex-fast-drying-filler-tube/

There are specialized products to imitate grain, color ... They even come in Systainers. ;) It's a hot hard-wax technology. Probably similar products are available in the US.

Suggestion for the door casing -

Repair the damage to the casing, then swap it out for a piece in a less conspicuous spot like a inside of a closet door or maybe one in leading down to the basement or some similar location where the loss of grain and stain mismatch (if any) will not be readily seen.

Thanks all!

It’s is on some place indeed pretty bad. Guess I ‘drop’ the grain.

Any sander recommendations?

Much obliged.

I think I’d use a finger sander attachment with a multi tool, and some hand sanding.
