Can anyone recommend a good finisher in the Chicago area?  I'm working on a fairly large project (multiple rooms in a new home) which requires me to outsource my doors and drawer faces for finishing.  I do not have a spray booth - nor do I have the experience - to finish these myself.  The required finish is a high gloss lacquer (or polyester) solid color.  All of these doors are simple MDF slab doors fabricated and prepped by me.  I appreciate any assistance you can offer.

I would like to discuss this project and review samples ASAP so that I can adjust my pricing accordingly.

Thanks in advance.

Hey PHmade

I just went through a similair process 4 months ago. I will share with you my experience.

First off a polyester finish AKA a true piano finish, will cost the most out of all the options and is considered a hand rubbed finish and thus extremly labour intensive READ: Expensive.

Second the HG Lacquer finish your after is an off the gun finish.  These finishes are also quite labour intensive.  The greatest chanllenge here is the perfection of the prep work. Between every coat the surface has to be good enough to hang up as a finished product. There is a local shop that tries to do HG lacquer and they are a perfect example of what can go wrong. Unlevel, imperfections, fisheyes, really its enough to make you double think the finish choice. I talked directly to the technical support at CHEMCRAFT and he said only about 3 percent of shops can do a true off the gun HG finish. Most guys won't even try due to the failure rate of doors. There is also the problem of scratching during and after install. These laquer doors are very difficult to match up if sprayed in seperate batches.

This brings me to my final point and what I offered my client ( a home builder who does about 15 highend homes a year all with extremely contempary kitchens) there are 3 options that will offer a HG finish.
1) Vinyl / RTF / Polymer / Laminate. What ever you want to call it. Its a low end option but an option all the same.
2)Parapan / Acrylic. Comes in 18mm and 4mm. Solid color HG finish scratches can be buffed out and returned to new. True highend option cost about $70 sq ft.  Can also have them mill in drawer and door pulls. For a true clean look.
3) Tempered back painted glass. Another Highend option out of Italy. Easy to clean and scratch resistant.

Just my opinion on what's becoming a new trend in my area.

You might try asking for recommendations from the Chicago Furniture Designers Association (http://www.cfdainfo.org) or from Woodworld (www.woodworld.com).

Otherwise, there are probably lots of refinishing shops serving the Loop, Oak Park, the North Shore, and Buffalo Grove south to Lisle.  You may find that a furniture specialist would be more than willing to pick up straight panel-finishing work for a reasonable price given the on-going economic downturn.

Thanks madera.
I agree with you on every point!  I am actually just finishing a job where I used backpainted glass for all of the doors.  I was able to persuade that customer away from the lacquer option... However, the current customer does not want edgebanding (of any type) and that is why I cannot do this one in glass or laminate.  I suppose the Parapan / Acrylic is an option but I'm not sure I can get that product in the US.  I have worked with Corian a little bit - I suppose I could try that or another solid surface?  I'll be visiting a few different finishing shops today and reviewing their samples.  I'll let you know if I have any luck.

Thanks again.

Hi CDM!

I am actually a member of the CFDA and I posted on their Yahoo group yesterday.  I did get one reply that I'm going to follow up with today.  I will give woodworld a try...

I would think that a furniture finisher would love an easy slab door to finish.  I think it would be so much easier than trying to finish a complex shape!  That being said, I want someone with experience and samples.  I'm having difficulty getting some finishers to provide me with samples unless I pay $200+.  I really think that's unreasonable (unless its a custom color).  I think every finisher should be able to provide a sample (of at least 1 color that they have in stock) in order to display their skill.  I know that I've had to make more samples in my own business and that just seems to be the cost of doing business today...
