I know Festool will not like this question....  But here I go.  With the release of the hk saws.  I was thinking how awesome it would be to use a hk saw to cut Hardie Plank siding.  TOOL NUT sells a CMT blade to cut cement board.  I know Festools official response will be using a non Festool Blade will void the warranty. I really think it will work awesome doing this tasks.  What do you think?

Here we go again. On page 18 of the owners manual it lists plaster and cement fiber products as approved materials for the saw to cut.View attachment 1

I was actually just getting ready to tag you.  I know that you have posted you have cut a lot of cement board with your saw ts55.

Plaster and fiber cement, happens often.

I have the 4 tooth CMT blade.

What Festool blade does Festool Specify? Do they even have one for this purpose?

Would not think any of these would satisfactorily cut HardiPlank.http://www.festool.com.au/epages/to...ooltechnic/Products/561732/SubProducts/561732

So naturally people are going to use suitable third party blades. Festool would recognise this with regard to Warrenty, and by stating the saws suitability for cutting fibre based sheet cement and plaster boards.

If you want an official position on the use of the HK/HKC with Hardie, I would recommend tagging Tyler.

I think exclusions #05 and #06 in the warranty, particularly the bit about "damage caused by misuse" are relevant to this discussion. Misuse is using a tool for something other than it's intended use. An extreme example would be using your Carvex to hammer in nails.  [scared] If Festool deems cement board not to be an intended use, that could be grounds for warranty exclusion.

The manual that was linked to by Tom, as far as I know, is not for the U.S. market. It may be changed for this market, that's yet to be seen since I have not seen it officially published by Festool USA. For what it's worth, the TS 55 manual also references in multiple places how to use the saw with cement board. That said, I've only seen Festool's marketing show the HK/HKC being used for wood.

Yes, we sell a blade for fiber cement. However, Festool does not have a fiber cement blade. That could be interpreted as them saying it's not for that use because they don't have a suitable blade.

If you read Festool's warranty, it does not state that using a non-Festool accessory will void your warranty. In #09, it states that damage resulting from the use of a non-Festool accessory is excluded from warranty coverage. The way I interpret that statement is that you can use non-Festool accessories as long as they do not damage the tool. Not that using a non-Festool automatically voids the warranty. However, see the statements above about misuse, which may or may not apply to the use of this blade as it pertains to warranty coverage.

Basically, I think it's unclear and there are some mixed messages between the manual and the lack of a blade for this application. Again, I would suggest contacting Festool if you want clarification.

Actually, there is a diamond blade on that page, direct link below. The photo appears to have a Festool logo on the blade, but the SKU does not appear to be in standard Festool SKU number format (6-digits). Says it's for fiber cement and made for the HK/HKC. This blade is not offered in the U.S.

Obviously did not check right arrow to flick to that blade.

Interesting, apart from price, that the Festool Logo is engraved rather than printed. Yes, probably as the abrasive nature of the fibre cement would remove any printed logo, but then so do many blade cleaners such a Acitate.

The HK's better be built like a tank.  Fiber cement was the first thing I thought of when I saw the new saw, gnarly wet framing lumber was number two.

I have inherited the use of a TS 75 this month, and I found a ton of gummed up blades for it.  I set to work cleaning the blades to see just what kind of shape they were in.  I used oven cleaner (Easy-Off, Pleasant Scent, who knew?).  The yellow and green print wipes right off.  However, a lot of blade info is engraved into the surface (item number, sharpening angles, tooth quantity, blade size).  So, [member=19746]Untidy Shop[/member] , I think the markings on the siding blade are mostly par for the course, other than a Festool logo.

[size=14pt]Yes indeed, the engraved marking do remain after cleaning [member=41832]WastedP[/member] .  Sort of makes you wonder why Festool bother, and we pay for those nice printed graphics.

As for the HK saws, Tank No! However, I was very impressed with the build quality, rugged design and features of the corded version I inspected last week at my preferred dealer. Unfortunately mine has not even come down the production line yet.  [eek] But my finances and Festool's production schedule should be in alignment by years end!  [smile]

I think the HK85 is a bit of a "tank" .. I haven't hauled it out in anger and now that I'm moving a lot of tools into temporary accommodation I won't be able to qualify my thoughts for a while [sad]

I have a brand spankin new FT blade. Australia seemed to be the last that still had them.

By the way---I think the TS is still the better choice due to dust collection.

Just a comment about the blade we offer. It's currently out of stock. We re-ordered more from CMT, back in May.  [blink]

Apparently, CMT is slow getting these blades to us historically. But, we have a bunch of them on order.

You will not be billed until it ships if you order it now.

Careful with that 'anger' Kev, you've already said how you took a wall to bare studs in frustration one time.... [wink] [wink] [wink] [wink]

I really would doubt that FESTOOL will endorse the use of the HKC models and offer their own blade for cutting any cement based products here.  Too much grey area in the litigious world with silica based inhalation diseases. For proof just grab a tube of cheap run of the mil caulking here in North America and look at the warnings required.

Just my  [2cents]

Peter

PS:  that being said, I have one of the CMT blades for my TS and will be using it soon for some Hardi-plank siding at my own risk.

Just in case anyone here on the FOG thought us Aussies were 'Fans' of Hardie Plank, have a read of this and how Australians were deserted by this Company.

[size=10pt]The scandal of its asbestos legacy was compounded in 2001 when the company moved its operation offshore and set up what it claimed was a fully funded victim compensation fund.

The fund ended up being short funded to the tune of $1.5 billion.
