Hi,
I have a 36mm hose about 3 mtrs long from my Kapex to my Festool Dust extractor and am always left with a fair amount of dust laying all around the saw, would I benefit by changing the hose to 50mm and moving my Dust extractor to about 1.5 mtrs away.

The short answer, Yes. The larger diameter and shorter length will give better results. Everything else being equal.

What dust extractor is it and when did you buy it? Is it cranked on high, is the bag relatively empty, filter clean...? I would have to ask that, but the older ct mini and midi vacs have lower suction...

I shortened my 36mm 5 FT (1.5METERS). It improved the dust collection tremendously.

I have a CT 26

Hi,
My ct 26 is over 10 years old and has never been overworked, I have a reusable bag, on high suction at all times.

With my Kapex, I too get some dust. I don't think you can ever get all the dust no mater how short or large the hose is. Or how powerful the extractor is. The Kapex DC opening is just a long way from the wood your cutting at times. I don't blame the Kapex, hose or extractor for not getting all the dust.

If it really is an issue for the site I'm on I can clamp a couple of 1"x2" to the Kapex MFT legs and staple some canvas drop cloth behind it to catch what little the DC system misses.

Whenever someone onsite complains it is creating a bit of dust.... I just unplug the DC hose and make one cut.....  and they understand just how much it does catch. [thumbs up].

Cheers,
Steve

Are you sure your CT26 is over 10 years old? Is it possible you own a veteran CT22?

Yes it is a veteran CT22 I got around to checking it out, I stand corrected. So maybe there is the fault I will have to invest in another newer model, any suggestions as to which one would be suitable for use only with the Kapex which stays in the workshop with no site work.

Rusty, for practical purposes the older CT22 and the current CT26 have the same suction and bag capacity. You can even buy CT22 bags that are similar to the cloth-like CT26 bags.

As it happened in 2010 when the CT26 and CT36 were being introduced to North America, I was opening my new cabinet shop. Assuming there would be good deals on remaining stock of CT22, I told my dealer and other dealers in the Los Angeles area that I was willing to buy several CT22. At the time I already owned 4 of them. I wanted to stick with the CT22 so that I only needed to keep one kind of bag in inventory. I originally bought a CT22 in 2006 because I did not want to lift a full bag out of the larger CT33.

Two of the Kapex in my shop still have dedicated CT22, connected to the Kapex with 2.3m x 36mm AS hose. I have used that length 36mm AS hose with my Kapex. My 2 Kapex which are permanently located in my shop also have standard miter saw dust shrouds behind them, Those shrouds are connected to my shop duct collection system with 100mm hoses. Those collect any dust and chips not caught by the Kapex dust port. The fact is that some Kapex cutting techniques are not as efficient for dust extraction as others. However, the technique you use for a given task first and foremost must be appropriate for the task without consideration of dust collection.

Rusty are you sure you are using the 36mm hose?  My Kapex has only minimal fine dust left when using the 36mm hose.  Shortening it will help as others have said.  But you will never get it perfect.
