How do you clean your Systainer?

Alex: I bought this systainer from Henk. I thought it might need some cleaning.

Yeah, I would consider Henk’s atrocious penmanship reason enough to spend an hour erasing that.

Hehe, lol, well, Henk's just a practical guy, not much interested in aesthetics.  [smile]

He's a cool guy though, let me have the 5 systainers for €75. I sold 3 of them off for €135 and kept 2 for my own purposes.

That one wasn't even that dirty.

Seems you also got the yellow aging tint off... how  [eek]

It really wasn't that dirty, I got most of the dirt off by washing it with soap under the shower and good use of the wire sponge.

I have had systainers that were from top to bottom covered in paint and glue which I had to scrape, sand and treat with thinner and those were a lot more work.

This systainer was also not really yellowed. It just seems a bit like that on the first pic because that was taken inside in the shower while the second pic is taken outside. The light source was just different.

But you can remove the yellowing with thinner/acetone. Just rub it with a cloth soaked in thinner. Not really practical to do an entire systainer like that with all its nooks and crannies, but if it's just a spot here and there it's fine. Thinner dissolves the top layer of the surface a bit, removing the discolouration. You can see its effect on the pictures below where I did an old yellowed clip. You do also remove a bit of the texture of the ABS plastic.

If you mean the 1880's, you would be correct if we are discussing Bon Ami. I think 1886. Their logo was a baby chick with the caption "Hasn't Scratched yet". Other manufacturers were using quartz as one of their ingredients at that time (think using silica sand to clean your porcelain sink) and this manufacturer replaced that with feldspar which does not scratch.

I believe this brand is still alive today. Love it when something like this lasts so long.

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread, but a trip down a rabbit hole brought me here.

Bon Ami is still available, but a bit pricey for those of us in Germany. [scared]

It's a little more reasonably priced here in the US.

Pretty much everything that crosses the Atlantic becomes too expensive. Yet if something crosses the Indian or Pacific Ocean, while vastly larger distances... does not become prohibitively expensive.

That's just ridiculous.  [eek] I get the shipping cost thing and I'm sure there is a limited supply, but at that price, they will never sell any of it.
Supply/demand ratio falls flat when the demand is zero.

All these platform sites are full of bs priced items. This Bon Ami listing is also from a seller with 22% of total reviews having 1 star... There is a ton of ways they profit; either by selling very few overpriced items, or by selling, billing, but not delivering a lot of cheap stuff, etc.

I get what you are saying, but who would really order something like that? How can a seller like this not get removed? I looks bad for everyone.

I’m a big believer that I should let the soap do the heavy lifting.

I would find a big tub and soak it in soapy water overnight.  Then a light scrubbing and rinse.

I watched as the automotive detail man cleaned a car’s engine compartment with “dry steam”.  That process is amazing.

Modern engine compartments have too many electronics, so conventional steam cleaning is a no-no.  But apparently the dry steam is OK and does not damage the electronics.

the superheated “steam” is at about 250 degrees, at which temperature there is no water in the liquid state, just molecules of oxygen and hydrogen.

When the dry steam hits a surface evaporates.  At that point you only have to take a dry rag and immediately wipe off the dirt and grease.  That same equipment is used by professional cleaning companies when they are hired to clean a restaurant’s kitchen.

There are units for consumer use, but even these are more than $300.00.  So you would need a lot of dirty Systainers before this makes sense.

Apple’s new, more aggressive spell checkers have been “correcting” my typing and changing the actual word, even when the original was correct.  I typed “there are units” and the spell checker changed it to “they are units”, which makes no sense.

Amazon is full of bad listings. As long as not enough people complain... stuff will just continue. They have a ton of "hybrid" products. With a picture of one product, the description of yet another, etc. I have reported a bunch of them, nothing happens.

Like this thing;https://www.amazon.nl/dp/B07L1VVCND?ref_=Oct_DLandingS_D_6446155b_NA
In the title it says Wago 221-500, which is the DIN-rail adapter for the Wago 221 in 4mm2. Yet the description says 221-510, which is the 6mm2 of the same. And you can see in the reviews... people got something different than they expected.

They also had a Bosch Sawzall with a picture of a hammer drill....

Third party vendors on Amazon (and online at Walmart) are the worst offenders, with prices often twice or up to 5X the price (or more) than if purchased at a retail store.

Well, what I don't recommend is putting them in the dishwasher, they came up a treat, but the wife was not amused.... do that when the wife is out for a few hour. Hello everyone btw..

Lots of great advice on how to clean your Systainer. I typically use Simple Green with a fine brass brush. The last step is to clean the locking latches and/or t-loc with ArmorAll (Something I learned from Sedgetool on YouTube). The ArmorAll gives them a slick surface and makes them so much easier to open and close. It can also make old tools look like new. No one would be able to tell that many of my Festool tools are 17 or more years old.  [cool]
