hi there.
i was reading another post and the subject came up about pricing stratagies.

the way i do it usually is i charge for the daily rate plus materials (if i supply), expesess (stuff i suppied but didnt buy especually for this job , ie stuff from stock a few odd size fittings etc) and over heads (power fuel etc) plus a few pound profit (depending on client)

Alan, nice topic.

Typically I write down all materials I need for a particular job on paper, with my cost, then another column with markup cost of material.

Then I estimate time I think I will need, and I'm not shy about overestimating here.  There are always things that come up on a job, and I hate asking a client for more money, unless its a substantial change that is driven by client.

Add the materials together with labor.  Done.

Not very proficient with Excel, so I write it by hand.  Need to take a class on Excel, I have a feeling it would help me make more money...

Exact same for me.  I'm not shy about charging either.  For example, the job i am on just now has various elements.  The house needed 10 new doors with new handles & latches.  I charge £50 a door to remove one, hang a new door & fit the handles & latch.  I did all 10 doors in a day & a half which works out to about £500.00 for 15 hours work.  That is £33.3 per hour.  If i was basing it on day rate then it would be £20 per hour.  Much better on a price.

on small jobs labour + material and a mark up on material and don't make your margins to tight especially on bigger jobs or stuff you don't really no what your getting into till you open it up ie: repairing work or snaging cheap kitchens from bad companies etc
