How does the EU ban on vacuums over 900w affect festool vacs?

missed this actually ... " (9) ‘industrial vacuum cleaner’ means a vacuum cleaner
designed to be part of a production process, designed
for removing hazardous material, designed for removing
heavy dust from building, foundry, mining or food
industry, part of an industrial machine or tool and/or a
commercial vacuum cleaner with a head width exceeding
0,50 m; "

So should have no affect , maybe I'll have to get a festool for home as well!

That's good to know. My mate is the manager at a Miele dealer and he said they sold out of every model of vac. He said people were buying them up to sell later on in the year.

I doubt you'll see them offering an Eco line for Europe and a power hungry option for the US. I'm thinking I will snag a power hungry model before the Eco-ize it!

As ludicrous as the ban is, I suspect it will benefit consumers in the long run. We should see more efficient systems and an uptake in brushless motors which in itself will have a knock-on effect to product pricing in other areas.

Or we might end up with vacuums underpowered which would result in longer vacuuming times in a standard house so defeating the point why the ban has been put into place?

Saying that the cordless stuff has really got a lot better.

My mum uses the G-tech for day to day vacuuming and a festool midi to do a good clean ever so often using air powered brush head.

My house is smaller and I don't have a dog like my mum so I get away with just using the G-tech.

It boggles me how groups of so called educated professionals can come up these ludicrous  rules. Are we going to have how power kettle and toasters next. I just hope that a system can be made efficient enough in terms of suction with the power level that is proposed. Yes there are cordless models which are good but no where near as powerful as corded. It has happened with led light bulbs so there may be a glimmer of hope.

Jmb What type of g tech do you use ?  Is it the ram or sweeper model.

The RAM

What do you think of it? I saw one at Costco and it looked a bit big and clumsy to me. I've got a battery sweeper model which we use for a quick tidy up especially after kids.

I can't seem to pull up the link discussing the ban in an earlier post.  In a nutshell, what does it say is the logic of this nanny state ban?

It's pretty good.  The batterie last long enough to do my house twice.

I do really like it.  Its quick and easy to just pop it out zoom round done.  No clumsy hoses or leads.

The negatives!  It does NOT like long pile carpet/rugs the power brush is on it can't be switched off.    It's no good for stairs.  We have a hand held for the stairs.

I hate dyson I have found all their vacuums rubbish.  Their new handheld one though does seem very good.  Unlike their old one it has a decent battery life.

If I was to buy a cordless vacuum again I think I would look into the new cordless dyson than the g-tech ram.

I have the g-tech handheld its okay does the job.  Just wish it kept the dirt away from the filter better.  The filter gets caked up very quickly.  Dyson handled don't get caked up they have managed to keep the dirt from getting to the filter.

So if you go the G-tech route you kinda need to buy the G-tech ram and the G-tech handled to clean your house.    If you go for the handheld dyson its a two in one.

EU loves controlling.

We British seem to follow the rules to the letter.  Unlike France,Spain,Germany,Holland etc they do what they want.

Don't blame them I wish our leaders told the EU to go where the sun don't shine.

The logic is to reduce power consumption across Europe.

Their are rumours the next electrical devices EU is going to target with a max power output ban are
Lawnmowers
Hair dryers
Kettles
Microwaves

So a kettle with less power will just take longer to boil.........

Not quite, a 1.5kW kettle will take longer than a 2kW kettle with the same element design. However, a 1.5kW kettle with a more efficient heating function could boil faster then the 2kW kettle.

That was my point earlier. Power will be restricted but that will force suppliers to develop more efficient designs which in itself will filter down to other aspects of product development. As an example, if brushless motors become standard in vacuum cleaners, the cost will drop and possibly make them more typical in power tools, even lower end ones.

I agree the EU situation is a joke, hell I suspect the collective power consumption involved in keeping the EU system going probably negates any potential saving made in these proposals but it may end up to the consumers benefit.

The EU is extremely energy efficient as it runs on hot air!  [wink]

At first, it does seem like a stupid idea. If the vac has less power, it'll just take longer to suck up the same amount of dust, and end up using the same amount of energy.

However, with a brushless motor and a more efficient airflow, a 900W can out-perform a 2000W+ with a standard motor & bad design. There was a discussion on the radio the other day with a guy who imports 900W machines from Germany (of course!) that already do that.

Hopefully it will force manufacturers to improve their design efficiency rather than flogging the crap they've been pushing onto the general public for years.

Edit: forgot to mention - he did also say that, unless you're vacuuming huge amounts of building rubble out of a really thick rug, a 2000W machine will rarely draw more than 1000W anyway. Which kinda makes sense!

When was the last time you changed the brushes in your AC driven motors?

That's not the point - brushless motors are far more efficient, and therefore use less power. Which IS the point. [big grin]
