How To Put Multiple Dominos In 2x4

Hi All,

New Festool junkie here.  I've been lurking for a while and have read as much as I can and watched videos, but I don't remember seeing the answer to my question.  My apologies if a simple search would have turned it up, but none of the search terms I used worked for me. 

I just added a Domino 500 to my Festool collection and am trying to join 2 2x4's (leg and rail, short-grain to long-grain).  Because I only have the 6mm bit, I want to put 2 dominos in the joint.  When I use the (for lack of better word) pin on the face of the domino machine to index from the edge, the domino is placed too far from the edge for me to put another one.  How do I index the first hole closer to the edge so I can put another domino in the joint?

Thanks in advance for any help.  I really enjoy this forum.  It made my decision to buy Festool so much easier.

Welcome to the forum!

The simplest solution would be to just strike a pencil line to mark the offset for your mortise rather than using the integrated indexing paddles. While those are great for quick reference, they don't work in all situations.

I'm sure the other forum members will offer their advice.

PS - You could also try using the indexing system on the support base.

Thanks for the quick reply.  Does the attachment you showed in the photo reduce the distance from the index point, or edge of the material, to the hole?

Yes, it does. You can see the paddle beside it in the photo. I'd guess about 3/8-1/2" closer maybe. But I don't have one handy to measure.

Stack the Dominos or offset them both horizontally and vertically. 3/4" from each edge, 1 at 1/2" from the top face the other 1" from the top face.

i'll be interested to see some responses on this as well, as i have run across the same dilemma.  the only solution i've been able to come up with, besides using the paddles on the extra fence, is to buy the Self Centering Guide and move it's paddles in closer.  however, this only takes care of your first domino.  unless you were to use the cross stop in combination with the SCG, i don't know how it can be done otherwise.

Hello and Welcome Wildcoach

I have not reviewed the DF500 but I have used it quite a bit in my various videos. Some of the techniques that I show for the DF700 work equally as well with the DF500.

I am in the process of writing an article and preparing a video on a practical project using the DF500. I will make sure that I post a link on the FOG when it is done.

The DF500 is a great little machine and is capable of some serious (big) work. The locating paddles are not as good as those on the DF700 but that can be easily overcome by technique or jigging. I would also prefer a better depth gauge rather than the coarse stepped control. Again that is a minor detail as one can always work around that type of thing.
