How to route narrow stock?

I just got an OF 1400 router, and I need to make a picture frame.  I wanted to cut a rabbet so that the glass would be recessed into the frame from the backside.  Any tips on how to do this without having a router table?  I just spent $1500 on Festools...I don't feel like spending another $1625 for the Festool router setup  [scared]

How about creating a simple, single use router table -- a simple hole in a piece of plywood for the bit and some countersunk holes for the screws.

If that's not an option, cut the profile on both sides of a much wider piece of stock that you feel comfortable edge routing with the 1400.  Then rip the stock to size.

Screw the frame piece to a large plywood base with another piece the same height as your frame piece right behind it. Make sure the frame piece is longer than you need. Now you can route it safely. When finished, unscrew it and cut your mitres.

I should correct myself...it's not that I don't feel like spending $1625 on a router table, it's just I don't want to at this moment...lol.  OK, I'll try to figure something out.

I think what I'll do is I'll route a rabbet first, then use my TS to make a cross cut using the MFT/3, then repeat, then cut some miters.  Let's see how this goes!

I have the OF 1400 with the edge guide (492636), along with an MFT/3 and the clamping elements (488030).  Place a wider board of the same thickness and length directly behind your frame piece (parallel to your cut line).  Use one set of the clamping elements to hold the wider board in place, and use the second set at the junction between the wider board and your frame piece to hold the two boards together.  Attach the edge guide to the guide rods and the guide rods to your router.  Align it so the edge guide rides along the outer edge of the wider board and adjust the router to the desired width of your rabbet.  Hope this helps.

I've used my OF1010 on the frame after it's made to route the rebate. Does depend on the width of the frame of course.

And you can use the little side foot if that's available on the OF1400.

Or you can build up support as suggested in previous post. It's very doable. I do this sometimes even though I have a router table - since it's can be quicker for a one of sized frame. I do a fair few frames.

1st figure out how much you need, buy a wide board or 2, use your router and a edge guide, rabbit, rip, rabbit rip etc

A home made router table and a power feed will give you a lot a versatility for not a lot of cash.
