How would you wainscot with trim like this?

If the walls are flat I install like Tom suggests.  If they are wavy or if maintaining reveals on an inset panel moulding is critical I rabbet the panel into the back of the wainscot frame and staple it in.

I also install wainscotting before I install casing.  It's easier to butt a piece of casing up to a panel than it is to fit a panel between two casing legs, wall and leg, etc.

Did you mean I use the 1/8" Hardboard i purchased, or that I should grab something different (the post said use the MDF)?

Trowel on some glue and use the MDF.

Choose the appropriate size trim, it will look good.

Is there any reason I shouldn't install the 1/8" hardboard first (41 1/4" tall along the wall) and fit the wainscot on top?

Seems like it'd be a whole lot easier, I'd gain 1/8" in the reveal of the wainscot.

The only downside I see is bumping out a little further into the plinth/casing, but I have room to spare.

Use the 1/8", not my favorite thing but it has its place.

What glue do you guys like for this application?

(Thin enough on the panel where I can trowel on, and won't push it out too far) and strong enough to glue 1x4's on drywall).

Tite Bond for the panel, PL or Sika construction adhesive for the 1x's.

Use a 1/16th trowel.
