I think I give up...

... on trying to land a deal of Festools through eBay.  I've been watching and bidding on LR32's and DF500Q's since July.  First of all, not many used come up - maybe 1 of each every couple of weeks.  Second, they hold there value like nothing I've ever seen before - wondering if they're going to start appreciating in value!

For example, been bidding on a Domino DF500Q with small assortment of dominos in the Domino Assortment Systainer.  Priced it all out on Bob Marino's website and it equated to $982.50 + $0.00 S&H.  This price is likely a bit high because the assortment of dominos is probably more robust in this estimate that what came with the machine of eBay.  The same setup on eBay (claimed to be used for one project but none-the-less still a used machine and not from a reputable dealer) just sold for $910 + $18.50 S&H = $928.50.  So, a savings of $54.  Furthermore, the sale didn't include a 30 day money back guarantee, etc.

This same story keeps unfolding every time I try to bid on something Festool.

Corey,

I understand your frustration but you can look at it another way. When you do make a purchase, whether it be via eBay/Craigslist/etc. or new from a dealer, you can be confident in knowing that should you ever decide to sell your Festools that you will recoup most of what you spent. And, you got the value of using them all that time.

What you said about the guarantee, warranty and having something that you know has not been abused or damaged carries some merit.

Best of luck in your endeavor. Hope it works out for you. The Domino is my favorite tool, although the RO 90 may give it a run for its money once I finally get one.

Shane,

I definitely haven't given up on Festool - I've just realized that I'm going to have to pay full price rather than scoring a deal somewhere, which is what I'm able to do with most other purchases I make in life.

Bob Marino will be getting an order from me likely before Christmas - just have to sweet-talk my wife a bit more.  The Domino and perhaps Kapex are in my near future.  RO90 is definitely on my hit list when it comes out.

I agree with Shane -- those high resale prices are actually in your favor in all aspects.  E-bay is a fascinating place, I regularly track a number of Festool, Lie Nielsen, Veritas and old Stanley tools.  Throwing out the Stanley prices because they are a different animal I have often seen many of those other tools go for well within

Hey Corey!
Yeah, I agree - chasing Festools on EBay will wear you out.  I gave up on it, too.

I think if you keep your tools for a couple of years (and Festool price increases) you might be able to sell for more than you paid. [unsure]  Crazy world out there.

eBay is not much use with Festool... especially with one vendor on there clogging up the listings with stock prices PLUS eBay fees... which is more than you'd pay any dealer on this forum.  [blink]

Now... Searchtempest will be your greatest friend and worst enemy.  It's a craigslist aggregator.  I've picked up a number of Festool, by finding them through there.  A precious few were as low as 60% of retail, most were about 75-80% for like-new.  Check it out.. be prepared to be happy and poor.

Great tip, Thanks!  [cool]

I watch Festools on Ebay also, haven't bought any though. Used prices are always too close to new to make it worthwhile. I guess I'm in somewhat of a different boat as far as the resale aspect. I haven't sold a tool in 30 years. The tool gets worked until dead or handed over to a newbie when I get the new and improved version. I have tools I might only use once a year but when I need that tool I want it. I'm not going to rent it or borrow it.

Same as everybody else on eBay scores.  I've had 2 where I made enough savings to make it worthwhile, but I've also had one where (my fault) I made some assumptions and thought I was getting more.  Didn't over pay, but didn't make enough savings to justify it.

Somewhere on FOG (and I can never find it when I look) is a thread where someone explained that they used a set of around 5 Festools for 4-5 years daily as a contractor.  When they sold it, thanks to the price increases and value retention, they made a pretty good chunk of change.  Granted, it went right back into buying the newer models, but that was the idea :)

I've been tracking new C12's on Ebay with a buy it now set to the old price, before the current 25% discount... and you have to pay shipping... someone please tell me how this is possible??
I did however score a used C12 today for $138 + shipping no systainer but I don't care about that...
I need more C12's!!

Just got approval from my accountant (wife) to put a Festool order in!

Have the Kapex/CT36 package, boom arm package, and Domino set with domino assortment and systainer in my sights.  Now it's just a matter of pulling the trigger - I always have trouble pulling the trigger though with such large purchases.

Congrats Corey, that's a hefty purchase!
I can't believe I didn't have a TS75 sooner. That thing saves sooooo much time.

Corey,

I know that you have been planning for a long time and I offer congratulations from a bunch of guys who sat around a table once upon a time.   [thumbs up]

Enjoy your tools!

Yes, what Peter said.
Although, I'm still pretty upset that Corey cut our cabinet bottom 2mm short at the cabinet class in July. [big grin]

Corey found some shims on ebay to fix that, Brice.  Although, they're used they kept their original value quite well.

Peter,

Yes, a long time coming.  Thanks for the congrats - I plant to make good use of the new weapons soon to be in my arsenal.

Brice,

The miscut in our cabinet bottom was about as noticeable as your note about it in your post - can't really see it unless you really look for it!  But, none-the-less, it is still there and yes it is bothersome - thanks for pointing it out again!  :-[

Congrats, Corey! I don't know what Brice is talking about, I didn't notice a thing.  8)
