Has anyone used the iDesign App?  What do you think?  Is there something out there that is better, in the $10 price range? Which App are you using?  How are you using it?  (I'm thinking that maybe it's time to move on from just using graph paper)  It would be great to get a program that gave all the angles and arcs of a design, all the widths, heights, depths, and lengths, would transpose them, and even provide a cut-list.  I know that there is a program out there that cost around $500, but I'm looking for something that costs way less.  Thanks.

Sketchup Basic is FREE.  The full pro version is the expensive one.  Most woodworkers aren't using the Pro version.

Download the free version and I think you'll see that you may not need more! [big grin]

How to get the free version

Cheers,

Frank

Maybe sketchup?

Thanks, sketchup cost about $500...iDesign is under $10.

Sketchup is the best and the simplest I have found (for 3D drawing). The 2013 version is called "Make" I believe and the basic version is still free. Most woodworkers would not have any need for the Pro version (which is $500) and the extra features in Pro aren't that useful for the average woodworker. Try it. There are a lot of tutorials out there. There are also some good digital books that aren't too expensive. The tutorials and books will teach you how to use it and then it's mostly just practice and getting familiar with it. It is very easy to learn. My experience is that you should use it on a PC rather than an iMac. The keyboard shortcuts are a little difficult on a Mac.

I didn't have much luck with sketch up, though to be honest I did not spend a huge amount of time with it. [embarassed]

I do have the iDesign app and love it so far. I have been using it for some 2d space planing and am very pleased that it is very easy to use but seems to have plenty of features that I could expand my usage of it in the future. It is surly worth the $10.

I just designed my first build with the sketchup that i downloaded for free...and must tell you guys that I love it!! But, I'm getting warnings that my licence is already about to expire. if Sketchup Make is free, then do I just ignore this warning? Thanks.

I don't think you should get that message with the free version. I actually haven't used Make yet (2013 version) but the others never did that. It's possible you downloaded the Pro version by mistake which has a trial license.
