Inside Cabinet Width Issue

Guys,

I am trying to build an entertainment center with a base cabinet to house the electronics and an open libray type cabinet (without the shevles) to house the flat panel.  The TV is a 50" plasma which measures 48" across.  Here is the problem.

The cabinet size is currently 52" wide including 3/4 inches for the plywood sides and 16" deep.  That leaves and inside diminsion of 50 1/2".  The stiles are 2" width that will be flush with the outside of the cabinet sides thus leaving 1 1/4 inches of the stiles protruding inside the cabinet.  Therefore the inside dimensions for the TV is 52" minus 4" or 48"

Obviously this won't work.  So here is my questions.  How much side space at a minimum do I need.  What are some ideas of how to make it work.

I thought of ripping the styile down to 1 1/2".  That would give me 49" inches for the TV.  That is close.  Will this work?  Yes I have thought about a smaller TV, but the 50" fit hour room better.

Any advise is very much appreciated.  The only thing that is constructed is two base cabinets that are 26" wide each.

are the side styles absolutely necessary at all? Could you just get by with a nosing or a style of only 1". I realize that there are proportional relationships to other details, but since it is un-built.....

My TV cabinet has shelving and storage in the 16" deep cabinets on either side (and above) the TV itself. The cabinet the TV sits on (with receiver, dvd, Wii inside) is about 22" deep and the TV sits slightly in front of the cabinets. The cabinets have 1" edging so the TV itself happily occupies a 48" wide area. My Panasonic 50" Plasma fits perfectly in front and has no heat issues as it just rises into the air. (But it's cooler than the previous LCD). This also allows for upgrades that occupy a similar space. Important as in 4-5 years, this will become obsolete.  :'(

Be careful that you get a deep enough cabinet for the electronics as some of the new stuff is pretty deep.

Questions.
Is the ply veneered or painted?
Can the ply be just lipped with say 3/8" thick solid timber, instead of stiles?
Apart from aesthetics, is there a reason the cabinet could not be made a little larger?

Answer these, and a solution may spring to mind or some bright spark lurking here may think of one. [wink]
Sounds like a cool project, keep us posted.

If your inside the cabinet dimension is 52", you can slip the tv inside (behind) the stiles. The borders of the tv might be a tad behind the stiles, but the tv screen itself should be 100% visible in the opening. Just make sure there is room at the top, above the tv for it to vent hot air out of the cabinet.

Guys,

Thank-you for all your advice.

I have decided to put a 3/4 inch by 4 inch board between the two 26 inch cabinets as a spacer. It should look good and Iwill be the only one (beside you guys) that will know it was not in the original plans. [smile]

Thx again

Jim

Make a couple of extra spacers as spares so you can sneak in a 60" set in the future.  [big grin]
