Chinking is the material packed into the joints in a log built structure. It's sort of like caulk in that it seals, compresses and expands with wood movement. I've never personally worked on a log built home, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express. [big grin] (American TV humor)
Shaping rail is the hardest part of the whole process, I use power hand planer to flatting top and bottom of rail , sand all sides, than I use router to shape top , than shape side form the bottom of the rail because it still flat, than I use scrapers , than allot of off sanding with diferent sanders and hand sanding . When I use router to shape I just hold the router really steady in my hands and follow the curve , because every wrong move makes a mark on the rail witch have to be sanded off later.
That is why LS 130 EQ comes really handy when sanding this type of rails or any type of rails, because most of the time I shape my own rails for the most rails I build this days, unfortunately I didn't have this sander when I was sanding this rail, but now I love that sander every time I use it [smile]

chinking is really tidies part but you really have to be good at it, and the guys who does chinking they make rally good money on it, and they don't need to many tools.
