Check out this site that is selling the Kapex...http://www.fixy.co.uk/products/item642.cfm  you have an option to get it at 110v! Does this mean that it can be used in the states if brought back from the UK? Do you get investigated by Homeland Security if you try to go around UL?

Yow! That would be over $2100US for that unit (at current exchange rates). It might be nice, but it's not THAT nice.

Yes,

But that looks like the price with the MFT and the extensions.

Of course I e-mailed them.

I wonder how fast I could sell 10 of them.

Darn that no-fly list. :o

Yeh, especially the "souped up" versions that you could advertise as 20 percent faster than the ones that will be designed for 60 Hz power used in this country, when they finally arrive.

You can try, but…
1. It will cost you more money. (UK price + UK taxes + shipping cost + shipping insurance)
2. You won’t have warranty in US.
3. Power frequency rate: US has 60 Hz,  Europe has 50 Hz. It's not a big deal, but still…
4. Festool dealer can’t send internationally. If you have cousin in UK ...
You have another option: buy 220 V version and use power converter or transformer. But … read 1 through 4.

Aside from the electrical considerations, it seems that the 110V version will not be available for a few months yet in the UK. Here's what one UK Festool dealer has to say at http://www.bunnysbolts.com/power%20tools/festool/kapex.html

IMPORTANT NOTICE - We do not have any stock yet but are taking orders for those who want to be first in line when we get our shipment. All orders taken will be put in strict order on a first come first served basis. 240v machines will start to arrive mid to late April and 110v machines are planned for June 2007...
The KAPEX is a mainstream machine with a far wider appeal [than the Domino] and we expect demand to far outstrip supply in the initial launch period. So place your order now and be one of the first. Be reassured in the knowledge that we are taking all orders with the clear option for cancellation at any time and receive a full refund.

UPDATE 15/03/2007 - Our expected April shipment is now pre-sold, orders now being taken for May.

As an US citizen, you shouldn't have to pay UK taxes (VAT in the UK is 17.5 % IIRC). However, you might have to pay US customs.

Christian

I live in the US and have purchased Fes from the UK. All I paid for was shipping and cost of tool. No VAT or customs. So for those of you who just cant wait and want to be the coolest kid on the block........ ;)

Fixey e-mailed right back....

Yes they will ship.  Waiting list until September.

I forgot about the 50hz thing though.

That would be a issue running it through the ct22, no?

I dunno.

The agents of Festool (our drug dealers) have been quietly suggesting that the Kapex should be available in the US sometime this year; however, they have been as vague and non committal on a time line as a politician running for office. I might suggest that the reason why the 110 version of this coveted tool is not yet available over the pond, is because the 110 version is slated for the US.  ;)

The compound mitre saw is a staple of US construction. Other contractors might think that an MFT and TS55 are nice, but wouldn't buy it because it's to foreign. But a SCMS, especially one that works well, and actually works with dust collection...That has potential (so long as the price point isn't too high). If this saw was designed and built to our UL standard, then we are mostlikely waiting for two things 1) UL approval, 2) Manufacturing and and a boat trip.

Another tool that might catch some eyes from professional contractors is the "pull saw."  It would be foreign at first, but assuming that it works really well in the place of contractor's table saw, It has some potential too.

Just some thoughts.

I reserve the right to be optimistic. :)

See Bob's post from another thread.

I am not 100% sure, but I don't think the Kapex will be here in the USA this year.

To stay optimistic, Bob did say he's not 100% sure  ;)

Universal motors are not affected by source frequency. That's just for induction motors.

Which means what, Rick?  If we had the Euro 110v model, it would make no difference in operating in the US?

were not due the 110v version in the uk till september as the guys at toolsave in birmingham told me but the price at £780 inc vat is a bit much for me so i'm sticking with my Dewalt 708 which only cost £425 so i've put the rest of the money towards a new beer cooler  ;D ;D
