Kapex Chop Saw Station Set Up

Will be purchasing the Kapex very soon to add to my under construction chop saw station.  Have two 6' long by 18" deep melamine cabinets that will be located on either side of the Kapex and incorporate Kreg's track system for setting stops.  Need to construct a third cabinet for the saw so that the saw deck is level with the two side cabinets.

From what I have found the Kapex saw deck is 4" high based on information that the deck height is the same as the Systainer 1 box which I find is 4" tall.  Also read that the width of the Kapex is 28" wide.  My question is if we construct the third box to be 28" wide and 4" less than the other two cabinets we will have a full length level surface for the chop saw set up.

Sure othes have a similar set up and want to confirm my dimensions will get me where I want to go with my set up.  Thanks in advance for any insight, suggestions, photos, etc.

I'm not near my KAPEX at the moment, but I do believe a SYS1 is quoted to be both 4 inches (which is 101.6mm) and 105mm ... so there's a conflict.

I'd also consider whether you want to add crown stops and in doing allow more width?

Build in a little adjustability for height and potentially for accurate level.

Do you have adjustable feet on the large out feeds?

Thanks for your input....the cabinets will be installed with the back edge resting on top of the sill plate edge in the garage and will have adjustable support legs closer to the cabinet front for full cabinet support but the whole cabinet will not be adjustable.

Probably the best situation would be to pull the trigger on the saw and then build around exact dimensions and not numbers in a spec sheet.  Can set it up with some adjustability for the saw to be shimmed to the perfect height.

How about making the cabinet greater than 28" wide, have some side overhang on the tops of the cabinets on either side and allow for some adjustability between those cabinets and their tops so that you can fit the tops up to your new saw.  Your center cabinet could be height adjustable if set on levelers and fixed to the side cabinets with slotted holes.  Something like that would allow you to have your cabinets ready for when your new Kapex arrives...

Also depending on how far back you mount the saw on the cabinet, the two side cainets may interfere with the saw when adjusted to the extreme angles as the miter adjustment handle sticks out quite a bit.  Don't ask me how I know this but I am in the process of taking apart my base cabinets to make mine wider.  Probably going to add enough inches to fit the crown stop extensions

Hold off on building your chop saw station and get the Kapex saw first. If you mess up on just one dimension you will be re-building stuff.

I utilize the KISS system frequently (keep it simple) . I built boxes for infeed out feed used the euro style adj legs for heigh adjustment, bought a kapex MFT toset inbetween and adjusted the height (you could just take the dimensions for the kapex MFT and use them with dj euro legs) . I got the Kapex MFt because I set a shop vac below it for dust collection. Going to put a small trash can there also to throw scraps/small cutoffs..

After you get the depth of the carriage, build your station 1/2" deeper.

And then plane shims to fit, which will elminate any possible errors....

nice set up.
is that box behind for dust colection.
is there a thread on that. i am expeimenting with similar designs  .
does the second back plate really make the air flow the way they say it should.
my first one doesnt really work that well , it would need to be moving a lot more air  to work

Alan, I received your message, and replied to it.

I'll share my reply here for one and all, in case someone wants to do the same.

Alan,

I built the box for the previous saw, a Hitachi, which had terrible DC.

Out of melamine, with a "big gulp" set into the bench behind the saw, connected to my 4" dust collector pipe.

Link to various "big gulp" vendors.

It was a vast improvement, but didn't get all of the dust, as the box is rather wide to fascilitate saw swing.

Now, with the Kapex, I don't use it but once a month or so to clean off the bench dust.

I put a piece of plywood over it other times.

Hope that helps,

Steve
