Kapex Dustcollection

Many people asked in the past if a Festool CT-Mini/Midi would be strong enough to handle the Kapex.

I say, yes. No problem. But because I'm always trying to improve things, I upgraded to the bigger hose for the Kapex. Yes, there is a difference to the smaller one, but not much.

As many of you know, the CT's loose suction as soon as the dust bag is getting near half full. In a real world situation that is exactly how it would be while working on a job site. Therefore, I shoot this video with a almost full bag.

Usually, you would set up all your power tools outside, in the garage or even in your delivery vehicle. In this situation, non of those options were available to us. We HAD to set it up inside. Because of the great dust collection there was no mess! Therefore our client was very very happy.
Right on that day, the Kapex payed for itself!

I will be in this situation tomorrow. I am trimming out a bathroom. It will be snowing & there is no garage. I will have to setup in the bedroom.
I would not even attempt that if I did not have a Kapex.

love the video, and you are right about the midi pulling it's weight with the Kapex, it does just a fine job.
In regards to the kapex saving countless miles of running, i recently came onto a job where my guys were installing a kitchen and had all their tools set up accross the entire house in the garage because the floors were finished and the lady had a lot of glassware in the room, i set up my kapex right on one of the cabinets against a wall which is possible due to the fixed rails(love this feature) and had crowned three quarters of the cabinets before two of my guys could due the remainder. But the best part was this, i disconnected my hose, vacuumed around my saw, rolled up my hoses, cords and was out the door while the garage ....., let's just say needed some TLC at the least (4 hours of vacuuming golf bags, shelves...etc.).

I have found a problem though with Festools. They spoil the heck out me for dust collection.

Every time I pick up another brand I'm shocked, shocked at all the dust. Festools tend to make me forget I'm in a dusty business.

I have used my Kapex a reasonable amount for non-furniture projects and I have seldom had dust collection as good as shown in your video. I often use the smaller hose, but I will try switching to the larger one and see if things improve. A chop cut as opposed to sliding the cut results in a fair amount of dust on the table and any time I cut MDF there is even more on the table.  Although dust collection is an improvement over my previous miter saw, my Kapex does not seem to collect dust as efficiently as shown in your video.

A while ago Craig made a YouTube video where he cut a bunch of nasty particle board with his Makita 7-1/4 saw to show how well it picked up dust.  I'd like someone to do the same with a Kapax so we can get a comparison.

I agree Craig's saw collects dust very well. You can't do much with a saw with this small cutting capacity. No question it's a great little saw but it doesn't compare to the Kapex for (professional) trim work.

Very true, but for someone like myself it would be the perfect saw since I rarely need tall cutting capacity.  I suppose you could always cut your crown on the flat instead of using the fancy festool angle finder.

I will try to take another two videos today. One with a sliding cut and one with a plunge cut. And maybe even a couple to compare the smaller diameter hose to the bigger.

Update:

Consisting of two set ups.
1. Festool CT-Mini with the big suction hose. Slide- and then followed with a plunge cut
2. Festool CT-Mini with the small standard suction hose. Slide- and then followed with a plunge cut. 

CT-Mini dust bag was half full and at adjusted to full suction.
Material cut: 7" wide 3/4" thick pre-finished ply

The difference is not huge but will add up at the end of the day...

Not that I know off... Could be that the piece of ply wasn't straight.

I have both saws and can say that the Makita at least rivals the Kapex in dust collection.  Unfortunately it is not nearly as versatile of a saw.  It is nice to bring on a job where I am only doing a few cuts, what other miter saw can you carry comfortably in one hand.
