Thanks - I think Peter nailed it. I made some more cuts with various degrees of support.
The original cuts were just trimming an inch or so, so there was no support on the small
off cuts - they just broke off but the keeper piece was a nice clean cut all the way through.
I went a bit further and did the same cut but used a longer piece so that I could clamp
the off cut - problem solved. If you were doing some trim with "returns" like chair rail then
you might want that little off cut - I suppose you would just cut off the nub with a utility knife
or something.
