kapex overkill?

Festools are for novices with plenty of extra cash, or professionals that want the best engineered tools that will last, and that will make make money for them. It is not as if buying Festool products will magically change you from a novice or intermediate carpenter into a master. Buy Festool when you have struggled with inferior brands that inhibit clean, productive work. Also, buy them because you always wish to buy the best you can afford!!!
Best wishes!

Interesting - what about the discerning and enthusiastic novice that appreciates quality and efficiency? You don't have to have "plenty of extra cash" as an entry criteria.

Festools are for people that appreciate Festools - it's that simple.

It's also much cheaper, I found out, to buy exactly what you want initially, even if it costs more up front, than being unhappy and then having to replace it and paying double.  There is nothing I own from Festool that will be replaced by something better, unless, of course, it's made by Festool!  ;D  As to why I don't already have a scms, I really have not had a need.  My mft had been used in that capacity but I'll admit not very well.  I try to buy things as I actually need them rather than just to have them.  I know that's blasphemy around these parts but it helps with the budget.

I actually think you've got the right approach. I had a combination of this and one of "replace old with new Festool", but I still seem to have a lot of the old power tools about ... including the dead SCMS that started the avalanche last September (gotta get some stuff on EBay).

I've seen used Kapexs on ebay for $1,100-1,200.  If you use it and sell it for that, it's cheaper than renting one, even if you could.

Does anyplace rent Festools?

Maybe.  I'm not ready to talk about it just yet.  Hang tight.

Update:

Festool rental/leasing, not dead.  Just on hold like the Carvex.
SEEMS that Festool has put plenty of road blocks/control in place to prevent this from happening or at least make it very short lived with repercussions.  If there is a denial to this in a rebuttal, I ask that Christian provide an official statement for clarification.
