Kapex zero-clearance fence and dust collection

Hi all,

I made zero-clearance fences for my Kapex, which works pretty well, but I got one (actually two) issues.

First one is minor. The 1/2-inch MDF was too thick and interferes with the hold-down. I guess there are ways to get around this issue. The second one is more important; the dust collection is no longer working well. I can see the reason. The dust shroud is behind the fence, while the saw dust hits the fence and deflects. During a wide sliding action for a wide board, the dust shroud is in front of the fence and does a good job but as it approaches the fence, the shroud is squished against the fence and doesn't do much work. Once the shroud is behind the fence, the dust collection remains poor until the saw passes the fence.

I wonder if this is what everybody is experiencing and there is a way to improve it.

Thanks,

I use 1/4" tempered masonite for my base and backing.  I cut 3" X 4' sections for the backing and use a 12" X 8' wide piece for the zero clearance base.  I adjust my depth so the blade does not cut clear thru and attach the backing with spring clamps.  To refresh I just move the base over and put the backing pieces closer.  There is not much to be done about the dust hitting the fence however.
