Wow, fantastic work. Can you share with us how you finished the cabinets?

It looks like your son will enjoy for years to come.

Thanks for the kind words. The cabinet style was my son's idea.  The finish is General Finishes Arm-R-Seal.  Just wiped it on.  I believe it was 4 coats.  I don't have enough room in the shop to spray, so I'm limited in finishing options.

Cheers,
Barney

Hi Barney,

Love your work.  Can you tell me if your General finish was the water or gel based product, and did you use the satin?  What stain did you use under the final finish?

Also, what Festool tools did you use in the construction of your cabinets?

Your project is stunning,  you should be very proud.

Thanks again all.

I used the oil and urethane topcoat. I generally start off with the gloss and put the satin on for the final coat. I think too many coats of satin tends to muddy the finish. Just my preference. I did not use any stain. Cherry is notoriously difficult stain. It tends to get blotchy (like pine).  Some people will dye it or put a glaze on it.  I find it easier to just wait for it to darken naturally. This will take up to a year or more. The finished photos of the kitchen were taken after a couple of years.  Just to give you and idea, in the following photo the little end table was a couple of years old. The desk was freshly finished. It now is the same color as the table. Both of cherry with the same finish.

Festools used......long story. But this project was my first taste of the green koolaide. About halfway thru the project my 20 year old Bosch 5" random orbit lost some of its smoke. So I ordered RO125. And I was smitten. ...

Those look fantastic. Quite a transformation of that kitchen.

I like that they go all the way to the ceiling.

Curious about the glass front doors at the top - any reason in particular?

Thanks for sharing -

Hi [member=167]neilc[/member]
Thanks. The glass doors were at my son's request.  I think his ceiling height is 9 feet. My wife also liked that they went all the way to the ceiling. She liked that feature so much that I'm presently making similar cabinets for our kitchen (only 8 foot ceilings). So I'll have to rip out all of our existing soffits etc. But ours won't have the separate upper/lower doors. The project requests never end. But that's OK. It's all good.

really like the design of your desk and table Barney: elegant & uncluttered lines with nice finishing touches makes the pieces look very appealing. Are they your own design ? V.nice.

Hi Billy,
Yes I designed and built both of those probably about 15 or so years ago. The desk I donated to a charity auction. So I don't have any recent photos of it. Thanks for the kind words.

Beautiful work all around. Cabinet are stunning and the desk and table are awesome too! Well done and thanks for posting!!

I am very disappointed... Was expecting a last picture with the refrigerator door replaced by a cherry door :P

Very nice transformation  [big grin]

Thanks again, everyone. And thanks to whoever correctly spelled "Kitchen" for me.  [wink]
