Knee pads

I'm at the stage in life where I MUST wear knee pads or else I'm in some serious pain. My old ones I've had for several years were wearing out and getting a little gamey so I went shopping. Literally everything at Home Depot was a horrible fit, made for people with twig legs and strangulation was the result, found something manageable at Lowes, a two strap where I only use the bottom one and they work decent, but then came across something at my local tile shop, Troxell XL Leatherheads. Simply the most comfortable knee pads I have ever worn, and since I wear shorts most of the time that matters a lot. Simple yet very effective design. Here's their site if anyone wants to check them out http://www.troxellusa.com/NewTechnology/Safety_and_Protection/TroxellUSA_Supersoft_Kneepad.aspx

I'm curious to also hear what other folks find to be their favorite knee pads for work?

This is a good reminder for everyone, to protect those knees. New ones are expensive to get.

I have become addicted to pants that have insertable knee pads. I wear Blaklader and Armed Work Wear. I prefer theArmed because they come in khaki and are a bit less industrial looking, more of a Carhartt style and fit. I keep the knee pads in all the time.

Paul,

I looked at the web site and the description listed as;

"Troxell Super Soft Knee Pad with durable leather covering are the most comfortable knee pads available. Wear with shorts. No rash, bunching or pinching".

Since they attach below the knee joint doesn't the strap pinch the joint?

I've been doing hardwood floors for 19 years.  8 years ago i discovered ProKnees and wouldn't dream of installing without them.  They are not for everybody, but there is nothing better that i have found.

If I wore pants a lot I would do the same, makes perfect sense. But I'm still wearing shorts here, I sweat just thinking of work lol

The strap is so comfortable it causes me no pinch, it is soft and elastic and with the velcro attach you fine tune the tension to your perfect tension

I use these. I have tried many others over the year, but I like these the best.
Knee Pads

I had not heard of the Troxell pads. I thought they looked great, until I saw how the strap fastened. With the rough surfaces I work on,  I would be catching strap all of the time & pulling it loose.

Another vote for the ProKnee.  Expensive but also rebuildable.

Those looked very promising but I need about 2-3" longer strap, of all the places to cut cost, and I know many guys with thicker legs than me. Glad they are working good for you though.

I'm gonna guess they are much less expensive than knee surgery :)

I like the ones with dual Velcro straps & the hard PVC shells .  I don't have a link or a p/n# but they look like a baseball ump's shin guards but only cover the knee area
I find the PVC really doesn't mar floors & has enuff protection that if I kneel on a extension cord by mistake I can't feel any pressure from any sharp edges IE. fireplace hearths, thin boards , tools ,
I find even the leather ones will have you feel a power cord if kneeling directly on them to the point of uncomfortable .
my knees are sensitive from all the time i've spent on them  [wink]

Do you use the 1" or 5/8" version?

WoW !

I'm just might get me a pair of those,
for when I start working on the house again
that shin support is the best I've ever seen & you can  re-build the things
You Can'T beat that at All !
last time i hurt my knee i was outta the shop for weeks ,
I don't mind spending $$$ on protective gear  at all
I know from experience ( the Hard Way )
that they actually will pay for themselves in saving you from lost time with a injury

I currently use the 1" thick.  I believe ProKnee recommends the 1" for over 200lbs. I weigh about 240lbs, so its worth it for me.  My first set was the older design and they had thinner padding.  The 1" are slightly more cumbersome when you are on your feet, and really bad if you try to climb a ladder with them on.  But when you are kneeling, there's nothing better.  If you sit back, all your weight is actually transferred to your shins, no knee pressure at all.  It takes some getting used to, but well worth it in the long run.

I always wear workpants with the insertable kneepads. Allthough my current pants are of the "Helly Hansen" brand, I prefer the flexibility of the "Snickers" brand kneepads.

But for jobs that require to be on my knees for a long time I have the long version of these: http://fento.nl/home/language/2/

(I also have the optional covers, which prevent mortar/sand going inside the kneepads when making a cement floor/ flattening a bed for pavers)

My favorites which will fit in the knee inserts of my trousers. They are the best I've ever used.

I've been buying Fiskars 9418 Ultra Light Kneelers Knee Pads for $10 a pair at Amazon,

I keep a pair in each car, and a pair at the house, and at the shop.
