Disclaimer: I received my DuPont (TM) Tyvek (R) 800 J Cat. III Coveralls from German PPE specialist "finnimport.de" on behalf of DuPont (TM) free of charge.
Let me start by saying that I'm always fascinated by companies that will go above and beyond even for their smallest customer, and even with absolutely no "big deal" whatsoever looming in the background. That's my experience with Festool, and thats my experience with DuPont (TM).
Now most here know me long enough to know that I'm obese and my health is maybe a 1/3 of what it should be at my age. Now that doesn't stop me, but it obviously makes various things rather difficult. That is entirely my own fault. I'm not complaining. I still work on it, sometimes more, sometimes less effective.
Now I needed a Coverall. The multiple decades old basement ceiling had to come down, and if you have for example an attic, you know that very fine, smeary, black dust that will sit atop of boxes after some time. Imagine that stuff, sitting on top of a suspended ceiling that is being demolished. You don't want to be exposed to it. And whatever else a pesky pre-owner might have done to it.
Had I needed a Coverall up to size XXL, I could have gone into any big box store and bought one of the shelf - case closed.
I knew I needed at least 5XL, maybe 6XL and to be safe having 7XL for a test fit wouldn't hurt either.
There are many PPE sellers, and I was absolutely ready and willing to buy 3 different size Coveralls with no option on returning them. Absolutely no problem.
After finding that DuPont (TM) actually made Tyvek (R) Coveralls up to 7XL - I went looking at my typical vendors. A few listed them, but you can't order them per piece, you need to take a lot/ shipping unit. Now for 3 sizes that would have been quite an investment. Sizing information was spare and in my experience is pretty unreliable, especially in regards to these "big sizes" as only few people have any real experience with it, if any at all.
I learned that DuPont (TM) does offer single sample units for testing and evaluation. (Obviously meant for large scale customers, and not a guy doing a basement remodel.)
I thought they can only say no, right? So I sent them an e-mail. A gentleman from DuPont e-mailed me back, we had a conversation on the phone and he said to contact finnimport as DuPont (TM) could not deliver any sample units for testing and evaluation directly to me.
To me that felt like a soft no at first, but I said I would contact the dealer. Since the Gentleman from DuPont (TM) was not exactly from first level customer support, I felt the obligation to contact finnimport. However I saw no reason for finnimport to supply me with sample units - as I wouldn't be buying any lots of them in future.
I made that very clear all the time. This is not a commercial/business request, I'm willing to pay for the units, but I just can't justify buying complete shipping units in 3 sizes.
To my surprise, it didn't even take a week from my initial contact to finnimport, them probably checking with the Gentleman from DuPont (TM), to an e-mail stating that my 3 sample units, one of each size 5,6 and 7XL, where en route - and to top it off even free of charge. (I obviously sent a neat little care package to my contact afterwards.)
When they arrived I noticed that the 5XL was the easiest to get out of the packaging, so I took that out first and tried it. I was able to get in, but didn't dare to bend over or get on my knees with it for the fear it might tear. Since everything else was fine, I knew that 6XL would be pretty much the way to go from here.
The timeline on this got unbelievably stretched. Let's just say, a few weeks after receiving the Coveralls Covid hit the world, and it wasn't until October 2022 that I was able to do the actual tear down of that suspended basement ceiling.
And to the people wearing these Tyvek (R) Coveralls everyday, I salute you. For me it was an incredible experience - and I hadn't even taped storm and chin flap, because of the afore mentioned health issues, I needed to be able to get out again quick if necessary.
So what can I say about the Coverall? It's robust & tight, it definitely keeps unhealthy dust and debris far away from your body and doesn't tear at the first contact with demolished construction materials. Make no mistake, it is hot. I was soaked. And it was a mild October day, inside a unheated basement. Obviously this speaks for the quality, they seal you off whatever surrounds you.
Obviously, I can't do any real penetration or other scientific testing. But I guess DuPont (TM) is a more than trusted source by professionals world wide. If they say it's rated, it will hold up to that, I have no doubts whatsoever!
If I need one again, I'm going to buy a full shipping unit of the 6XL size variant.
Here are some pictures for you guys to watch and enjoy.

Fun fact, all in all the weight was 750kg.
And a question, as I know many well-known, traditional US-brands building work wear do have "big sizes" readily available, can you get a Coverall like this at the US big box stores in sizes bigger than XXL? Anyone willing to check upon their next visit to one? I'd really be interested in knowing that.
Kind regards,
Oliver
