I have decided to build my own doors for my house.  Mill shops want around $350-400/ EA for the door style we have chosen ($7100).  I have a full  shop and a domino XL machine.  The materials will cost me roughtly $2600 total  Why wouldn't I?

I intend on using poplar with MDF panels to make shaker doors.

My question is should I buy solid stock (8/4 milled to 1 3/4")  or laminate two pieces of 5/4 together.  I have done a few doors for clients in the past and usually use solid stock for this, but I am usually using a different species.

Any input would be great!

Thanks for your help!

Interior doors?

Look at stave core material for the rail and stiles. Finding straight lumber (that will stay straight) to mill for this is not an easy task.

Laminate if you really want to go that route.

What is the cost of ordering those premade rails, compared to buying Popular solid stock?, are your doors 8' foot or 6'-8", if your going to paint the doors, just picking straight popular wood  would work fine, the material I would think would be a lot cheaper than ordering and shipping those cores. If you go with a stained mahogany door or other expensive hardwood, then using a veneer might make more sense.

FWIW
I ordered some custom doors from Vintage Lumber in Gay Ga. They only use laminated rail and stile construction.
