I'm sharing this because I thought everyone here would be interested in this. It also got me thinking about a lot of tools we use which could be powered by laser. Aside from "laser cutters" why not a router, track saw, domino joiner, jigsaw and even a sander? It seems highly possibly with some kind of fine adjustment of the laser wood burning would be a thing of the past, plus, wouldn't it be cool to see a 3D laser cut a router profile?

Anyhow, enjoy the link!

There is a shotgun manufacturing company in the US that uses lasers to cut the checkering on the walnut shotgun stocks and engraving details on the metal parts. The engraving is virtually not distinguishable from very good hand engraving.

The laser checkering produces smoke that has to be carried away, but leaves sharply defined patterns. From what I've seen at the factory, laser cutting of wood more than a couple of millimeters thick would be impractical.

laser cutting is slow compared to the rpm for most motor based cutting.

plus there are fumes created from cutting (toxic fumes for some materials). I reckon laser cutting hair will smell quite nasty if it is a lot like burning hair.

I can see lasers being game changers in the not too distant future.  Check out this new company's laser cutter.
