Let's talk about saw blades...

Iain,

Wow Iain.  Thanks for the quick response and your help in this matter.  This wouldn't be an issue except that I'm in the middle of job and have been delaying a couple of things until I get this blade.  Thanks again.

Iain,

It might be helpful to post a comparison with part numbers of Festool versus your part numbers(or problades.com numbers) so that we can easily order.  I.E. panther = xxxxxxxxxxx.  I am ready to order and would find this helpful and I am sure others would too...

Thanks,

Peter

I used the blade today and the results were great.  I was cutting down a 1 3/4" thick hard maple workbench top.  I had to rip it and cross cut it and the blade performed flawlessly - no burning and very little scoring marks.  I've never used the panther blade so I can't compare the two.  The Tenyru offers everything that I'd hoped for.

Iain,

At the recent (November 2008) Hartville Tool sale I met you and Mike and ordered two of Tenyru's 160 mm rip blades for my TS 55 saw.  I am most interested in this style blade due to it having a kerf width that closely matches that of Festool's 48 tooth combination blade supplied with the TS 55 because I would like to keep the edge of the rubber strip on the Guide Rails consistent between blades.  I plan to be ripping some 8/4 mahogany and 4/4 and 5/4 oak and poplar, and later possibly several 20 ft lengths of LVL.

I have been very satisfied with the performance of Tenyry's Gold Medal 10" combination blade on my table saw, but I am concerned about resharpening it and other blades when needed.

I encourage Tenyru to establish a resharpening service, or if that is not in the business plan, to at least to post on their website a list of independent resharpening service providers that meet the necessary high standards.

Thank you for the feedback, in case anyone is interested here is a link to to video comparing the cutting noise of the FESTOOL 28T blade to our new 28T blade (PSW-16028CBD2).

Well, after seeing that video, I think I will have to try one next time I am up for a new blade. I just purchased a Festool 28 tooth combo blade, but yours will be next.

I recently aquired the 12t, 28t, 48t (fine finish) and 48t (composite) blades.

I used the 12t and the Composite blade this weekend.  I was only ripping 2x doug fir, but I was very pleased with the cut quality of the rip.  Very smooth and easy cut for such an aggressive tooth.

The composite blade was REALLY nice.  I used it to cut some reasonable quality 3/4 melamine.  I did use the chip guard (right side), but I got very little chip out on either side of the cut.  I did not use a scoring pass, and my feed rate was fairly fast.  I was just making some shelves, so I wasn't too concerned, but I would consider the cut quality to be high enough to produce some decent (melamine) cabinets.

I haven't tried the 28t or the 48t (fine finish) yet, but I'm very hopeful based on the performance of the other 2.

I would also point out that the 12t blade took a very, very small piece of the splinter guard on my first cut, (from where the 48t Festool blade had it trimmed), but after that, the 48t composite blade tracked that same line perfectly.  I'm hopefull that the other 2 blades will produce similar results.

I'm also beta testing an 80t blade for the Kapex that I was very impressed with on making quite a few cuts on 1x oak last weekend.  Very smooth finish cuts with virtually no tear out.  Also a very quiet blade.  My reference was an 80t Freud Diable blade on a Hitachi SCMS, and the 60t standard Kapex blade.

I'm very anxious to see what they come up with for the TS75.  My only reason for trying these blades is because I don't want to replace splinter strips on my rails constantly, but I also want to use the appropriate blade for the task at hand.

Question before I order a blade...

Is the
Tenryu PSL-16048ABM2 160mm X 48T Blade for Festool TS-55 Plunge Cut Saw the replacement for the blade that comes standard with the TS55?

Hello Kevin, Thank you for the question. Our version of the standard Festool TS-55 blade is the PSW-16048AB2, not the blade you state. The PSL-16048ABM2 is designed for chip free cutting of laminated melamine etc.
Thanks again, please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

If you ever need any testing by a really inexperienced person, you'll have to look me up. ;D

Iain,

Could you list the blade model #'s and their corisponding applications?  When viewing the available blades for the TS55 on Prosawblades site there is no real description of what your getting that I can understand besides tooth count.  I also looked at Tenryu's site but could not find this info there either.  Thanks in advance and thanks for giving us more options!

Jesse

ripomar,

I have not checked Tenyru's website, but I have a pair of their recently introduced 12T rip blades designed for use on Festool's TS 55.  The packaging and the blades themselves are well labeled as to design features of the blades and how to properly and safely use them.  I haven't looked at Tenyru's latest print catalogs, but I know their earlier versions included detailed descriptions of their various blade offerings.  I am very pleased with their 10" Gold Medal 40T combination blade's performance on my table saw.

I have not had an opportunity to give my new rip blades a test.  I may be ripping 20ft lengths of LVL come next spring or summer, though.

I have paged through the 44pg download of Tenryu's catalog looking for the appropriate blades for the TS 55 and descriptions of such yet have not found them...I may be overlooking them but I don't think so.  Perhaps they are too new for that catalog but irregardless this would be a great place for them to explain in detail the options now available to us.  Can't buy it till I know what it is  :)

+1 on the Tenryu Gold Medal, I've been using them for several years and it's the best all around blade I've ever used.
