In the description of the LR 32 Guide Plate - 494340 it says "Most plunge routers can be used".  Does this really mean it works with other brand routers (like my current Porter Cable 892)?  If so this could mean I get the LR32 system first and a Festool router after the sticker shock wears off a little.

Festool is not known for making accessories that allow other brands to be used.  It is a system.  That phrase relates to most plunge routers in the Festool line.  I suppose that you might be able to modify the plate to allow attachment of another brand of plunge router but centering the bit in the hole will be the key issue as well as the dust extraction to prevent misalignment and difficulties in operation.

I figured that, but found the wording "most plunge routers can be used" a bit odd if it was Festool only because there are just 3 Festool plunge routers so anything less than all of them would be just one or two, so why not list them.

I agree with you.  But you did bring up - at least in my mind an interesting concept.  One other drawback will be the 8mm shafts on the drilling bit.

There are two screw holes in the plate used to attach the OF1400. You could explore using these to attach a non-Festool router.

I purchased the Trend 4 plunge router from Klingspors when they had it on sale for around $80. It is currently around $99. I wanted a dedicated LR 32 system. I had to drill 2 holes in the plate and then everything worked great. No issues at all and I just leave it mounted. It is always ready to go. I can now do shelf pins holes extremely fast.

It is small yet powerful and has great dust collection. I have done a lot of shelf holes with it and never had to cleanup the dust.

I was pretty impressed with this little router. I may start using it for other things.

I have the version (there are two, IIRC) that mounts both the 1400 (through screw holes) and the 1010 (using hold downs). I suppose if you had a router with a base with no obstructions, you could do it with the hold downs.

Or you could re-drill the plate.
