I have some medicine cabinets to build. They have relatively narrow sides (~5 1/2 inches). Since I am not sure exactly how the hole drilling system works, I am not clear if it is suitable for this width material. Can the system be used with relatively narrow material

Did the guide plate ever get redesigned to fit the 1400 router?

Yes Mark, it did,
It simply screws on now, however you must still use the centering mandrel to get it centered.

John, I don't see why not.  All you need to do is have material of like thickness to support the guide rail.

As for routers, I think I'd go with the 1010 as I cant imagine you would need the bigger router for pins or even Euro hinge LR 32.  Then again, since you're just sliding the router along the rail I bet size doesn't matter (at least that's what I keep telling myself  ;D )

Bill,
I did buy the 1010. For me, I see a clear place for the 1010 and the 1400. Cost is always is an issue, but so is time, the way the tools work together, and the ease of working with tools that have a similar design concept. I have some other routers (PC, Milwaukee, Bosch) and I have no complaints about them, they are fine tols that do what I expect. They do what they do slightly differently. The Festool 1010 and 1400 what they do in similar fashion and the compliment one another. That is value added to me and I am happy I have both!
Thanks
John

John,

I clarified my post.  I meant to say "As for the LR 32" not "As for the routers" meaning if I had both routers I'd pick the LR32 for the 1010.

Mirko, all, the centering mandrel is not needed with the 1400, from the Festool FAQ database:
There are two predrilled holes in the guide plate of the hole drilling set that match the threaded insets on the bottom of the base plate of the OF 1400. When you attach the OF 1400 to the guide plate with the screws provided, it self-aligns and is centered. There is no need to use the centering mandrel.
The centering mandrel is for use with the OF 1010 router which attaches using the knob and washer assembly. The centering mandrel is used to align the OF 1010 router with the guide plate.

Brice,

I find to much slop in the holes in relation to the supplied screws. I didn't know the mandrel wasn't needed for the 1400, I think I missed that in the very detailed instruction booklet that ships with the LR 32.  :D

John,

I was talking about this the other day with someone and how about leaving both sides of the cabinet together while drilling the holes and then rip the side in two. To make sure that both parts ended up the same width leave an extra 3/8" in the middle and then rip it twice and there you have it.

Might work.
