Magnifier Light

I love my TS55, but realized that I wasn't placing the rail accurately because of my aging eyesight.  Therefore, I was wondering whether anyone has a good suggestion for a magnifier/light combo to use with the TS55 rail.  I thought I had this solved when I bought a head visor with a light and magnifier, but I only need it when setting the rail, so I take it off while cutting.  As I result, I end up spending half my time looking for it when I need to make the next cut.

I was thinking of a magnifier/light that could clamp to the workbench, but haven't been able to find one that was large enough for this purpose.  The ones I see are fine for sharpening and cutting dovetails, but not to check the placement of the entire rail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,  Steve

I think it's called laser surgery for old guys like us Steve

I've had Lasik!  My eyesight is actually 20/20 - but that's my eyesight across the room, not 12" away.  The problem apparently is that when you get older your eyes lose the ability to adjust from distance to reading distances and there's no laser solution - just making things bigger.  I realize the problem is part bad lighting and I could fix that, but I don't see well under florescent light.  I can see great in real sunlight.  Even if I solved the lighting issue, it would be so much easier to be precise if I could make everything double or triple in size.  Kind of like why professional baseball players can hit a 100 MPH fastball.  To them, the ball seems larger than it is to the rest of us.  I have a theory that really good woodworkers have something similar that lets them see the wood in more detail.  I'm just trying to emulate that with some artificial magnification.

JMB,

He's reached his maximum allowable posts so he has to start all over again.  It's a special title reserved for the highest posters.  You're almost there buddy!  Just 2 more and you'll get the leet t-shirt to show all your mates.  Hope you don't mind, but all that's left is a pink one.  [big grin] [big grin]

I did think it had something to do with a lot of posts but like I mentioned he only has a average of 1.04 a day posts and I have not come across his name before on here which thruw me off and confused me to why it said leet.

If you look up the definition, it seems to be 1337.  Maybe the software has a glitch and Shane has to fix something.  Maybe he encoded a secret language in the forum.  You should probably check all of the members on the forum (approx. 9400) before reporting the issue as an isolated one.  Get busy!  ;D

I just got this LED Light for Christmas.  I have not had a chance to use it yet but it came highly recommended by another member here on FOG.

You just haven't been around here long enough, as he has a few years on you.  [tongue]

Steve,

I think you are going to have a hard time finding something you can fix mount for use with the guide rails that is also convenient to use.  I to have had lasik surgery and I have to wear reading glasses to see up close.  I have several sets of bifocal safety glasses in the shop that I use and I have installed more overhead lights in my shop to give me more light.  I haven't tried these but they might help:

Ken is right, he currently has 1337 posts, and the geek who wrote the forum software probably did it as an in-joke.

Seth was a very active member here a long time ago, but stopped using this forum for various reasons, I think. Good to see him back though!

Don,  Thanks.  I saw that Rockler light, but the arm seemed too short.  I wanted something with a swing arm long enough to have a swing arc (I may have made up that term) with a radius of at least 3 feet.  I was also hoping for one with a large magnifier, so that the field of view would be as large as possible.

Jack, Thanks.  I have prescription reading glasses, but they're not very shop-worthy and don't provide the kind of detail I was hoping for.  Did you use anything special for the overhead lights, or just fluorescents?  I tend to see really well in sunlight, so I was hoping to find some kind of overhead lighting that used those special full spectrum bulbs that are supposed to simulate actual sunlight.

Steve,

I have a magnifying lamp that has an arm that extends about 40 or 45 inches, which might suit your purpose.  My wife found it on overstock.com, http://www.overstock.com , if my memory serves correctly.  I just did a search on their site, didn't find anything, but it is worth checking them from time to time. Woodcraft has one, http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2003216/1640/Magnifying-Lamp.aspx that is similar to the the one I got from Overstock.

Another possibility is a metal plate that goes on electrical boxes, screwed to the wall.  I have several in my shop.  To that plate, when needed, I can attach a magnetic base lamp, which is very useful for adding light.  I realize this doesn't necessarily solve your problem.  Still, added light is always welcome.

I can't find an example of this lamp; I think Woodcraft had them on sale for about $20 a few weeks back.  They ordinarily sell for about $30

Thanks!  That's what I was thinking of.

Hi,  sorry for continuing the OT. But just to make things clear.

First off, I guess I am not in the know or am just dense, but what the heck is a leet?  [huh]

I just changed my screen name froom semenza to SRSemenza.

I had enough post activity  in the past here that my count and average is still high even with little activity over the last couple years.

I am a recently retired moderator on talkFestool due to  lack of time and ambition to keep up active moderator duties.
Which means (depending on the ambition part  [smile] ) I will have more time to actually post on both sites.

Again sorry for the OT. If the mods here feel that this should be moved , go ahead,  no problem.

Seth

It seems to be some computer language techese for the number 1337.  You'll find it when doing a search on the word leet on Wikipedia.
