maple and wenge coffee table

Very nice.  What did you use to get your strips to final dimension before glue up?

I used my Hammer A331 with byrd head. The maple is birdseyed and figured so a straight knife jointer/planer would have been a nightmare.

Outstanding work, Eiji.  I really like the contrasting wood with the offset.  Anxious to see it finished.

I'm happy to tell that the table sold even before I applied the finish.

I though you guys might like to see the finish. It's ML Campell's Level Acid Sealer (post catalized), and their Krystal Gloss CV. It only took 10 coats of sealer to fill the Wenge pores.   [eek]  I only waited a week before polishing. I am happy with the results and the customer was amazed!

Sweet finish!

I always loved high gloss finishes, but with 6 kids and the dog it wouldn't last a week.

I could see the dog jumping on the table now with the kids dragging him off and his long toe nails digging in.  :-[

Looks great.
Love that gloss.
Something I would like to try sometime.

Eiji:
Did you use your Capspray to apply the finish?
How do you like it over your (old) Fuji (mini)?
Also have you tried any grain fillers on Wenge or do you prefer multiple coats?
Again, I love the look!

Tim,

I tried using timbermate and crystalac grain fillers before trying the level acid sealer. The timbermate does a decent job filling the grain but it stains the wood and is extremely difficult to sand. The stain it leaves on the wood mutes the grain. I don't like it at all. The crystalac has to be th worst product scam out there. I put 4 coats on and it looked like I hadn't done anything at all. It takes forever to dry and doesn't seem to ever dry completely. I wasted so much sandpaper on that junk. At least I could see the progress with the level sealer. It drys fast and sands very easy. Keep in mind that wenge pores are huge,it only took 3 coats of sealer to fill sapele. And it took 3 hours to do that.

I sprayed it with my binks sv100 hvlp cup gun.

The fuji was a horrible waste of money and with the capspray only the compressor made it a good deal. I tossed the gun.

I may try using an epoxy sealer for a couple of coats before going on to the level sealer. Next ti

I don't get that. I do not spray, but I use Wenge all the time(and right next to maple) and use the crystalac for filling the pores with no issues at all. You have to use a sanding sealer and lightly sand before you use the filler, possibly you do it differently? Using the crystalac on raw wood is not going to work well at all. Sealing first is probably why the color comes right off the maple when I am done. :)
