MFK 700 Horizontal Edge Trimming

You might want to look at http://www.burrellcustomcarpentry.com/subpage45.html for an idea of how to do edge trimming with a 1010.  I am currently exploring whether I can use his notion with a 1400

Yes, this setup works with the OF1400, well mostly. The chip guard (it helps with the dust collection) doesn't fit the 1400. The parts needed are the angle arm and the edging plate.

I've used the 1400 and not had trouble with the weight but I use two hands to steady the router.

How about altering the horizontal base?  ;D

That could possibly be done, but I would likely just search for a cutter with a shorter overall length  or use a different style of cutter when doing that like od work.  I really don't want to modify the tool if I can go another direction and solve the issue easily.

I decided to send the 700 back and ordered a 1010.  The 700 is a cool gadget, but for me it's too limited: the longest bit available is 5/8, and as someone pointed out, without modifying the gadget or having a machine shop there's really no way to trim anything longer.  It's made for lighter-duty stuff than I do, which doesn't make it a bad tool . . . I'm hoping I can adapt the 1010 to do a similar job.  I'm familiar with shop-made solutions, and have a cheapo handheld with a crude adjustment, but the ability to dial in tiny fractions of adjustment makes a big difference.

the edging plate for the 1010 makes as fine adjustments as the 700.  And since the bearing surface is the base of the router instead of a bearing other cool things can be done with it as well. Like these sliding dovetails.
