MFT/3 v Make your own plus fence

I’ve been wanting an MFT for some time now and finally decided I’d go with the MFT/3 with the fence etc. Here in Australia I’ve been following how much used tables go for and they’re usually about $900 to $1000 (new ones cost $1400). So I’ve been waiting for a second hand one to come up and thought with the money saved I’d buy some dogs etc.

Over the last few days I’ve now had a change of mind, or the idea of making my own MFT has come into the equation again. I do pretty much all my work out of my workshop so portability isn’t a concern. I’m still undecided and was hoping if some questions could be answered I might be able to make a decision.

I figure for $1000 AUD, I’d be able to buy a parf dog system mark 2, plus quite a few accessories such as dogs, squares etc.
Now my only concern going down this path and not the Festool MFT/3, is that I’d want a fence for repeat cuts. I don’t see myself using the angle gauge. I’ve searched quite a bit and I’ve seen incra and woodpeckers aluminium fences. I was hoping people could post pictures and maybe a link of their fence and where they got it from? And whether they’d go down the same path again. I’d want a scale and flag stop at an absolute minimum.

I was also looking at benchdogs in the UK,https://benchdogs.co.uk/collections/frontpage/products/copy-of-fence-dogs-1250mm-fence

This seemed like a really attractive option as it’s low profile and can be attached using dogs. They also sell a kit in a systainer with dogs and a fence that comes in multiple 350mm lengths. Has anyone used these? I can’t seem to see anyone on FOG that has posted pictures or used them?

And one last thing, how do you attach the guide rail to the table? I suppose rail dogs would be an option along with just butting up the rail against the dogs with rail clips and away you go? Any other options?

I appreciate the input.

Thank you,
Andy

Hi Andrew i bought a 4 foot fence rail from benchdogs uk ,to secure this to your bench just use the slotted bench dogs into 20mm holes, the slotted bench dogs comes with knobs and tee nuts to fit into the fence rail, get the flag stops from them too its all good quality stuff. regards from Liverpool Tom

If you are trying to keep costs down a very simple way to attach your fence would be to use a bolt with the bolt head in the bottom of your fence through a hole (or slot) in the table and tighten with a through knob from the bottom.

You could make a fence from this:https://www.woodcraft.com/products/incra-t-track-plus-48-length
or any fence with a t-slot in the bottom.

And use Snap-Lock Knobs:http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=60934&cat=1,43455,61994&ap=1
You would put the nut in the knob instead of the bolt.

Something like on this Kreg Router table.

Hi Andrew also check out a company based here in the uk called ooznest.co.uk, they supply aluminium extrusions of different sizes and any length you want ( I bought 20 x 40 size for my fence rail ) they also sell flag stops and slotted dogs with knobs and t nuts Tom

Andy, I think Benchdogs just uses standard 2040 extrusions.  Can you get those locally?  The only difference is you would have to do without the laser engraved scales and apply a stick on scale.  That might save you a lot on shipping.  I would prefer a continuous rail vs shorter sections.

As far as joining the saw guide rail to the dogs, the UJK clips should do the job.  Benchdogs sells those too.

That's what I have as a fence on my MFT - I'll post some pics later tonight.

Thanks mate. Just interested how you attach it etc and what you think of it in use.

Has anyone set up an MFT top with these? I’d love to see some pics how you did it.

I use those of my MFT/3 and on my KAPEX station.

Because they have the metric incremental tracks on the rear, a metric Shop Stop provides easy, millimetre accurate, repeatable stops.

I used Qwas Incra Mini Rail dogs to attach them to the MFT/3 and KAPEX station which makes them easily removable when required. You can also position them wherever is most convenient on the 96mm grid layout.

Plenty of photos below...  [wink]

Apologies - the forum software doesn't seem to like me adding all the photos in to one post so having to split them...  [sad]

You’re the man Garry! Thanks for that. Do you find the incra better than the standard Festool fence?

I see a lot of people change out the standard fence and go for aftermarket ones. Has anyone tried the bench dogs uk fence?

Keep the posts coming I appreciate it [emoji106]

good to see ya posting again Garry. Been a while. I guess you were to busy flying that helicopter  [big grin]

If you have a 3D printer (or know someone who does), here is the 3D printable MFT fence clamping system I came up with on Thingiverse.

The original thread about it is here.

I used the Incra 'L' brackets to attach the fence. It's also pushed up against a couple of dogs.
