MFT3 Rail Question

Why is one end of the fence milled on the rail for the MFT3?  I noticed this on mine when I purchased and was curious what's it for?

So, you can mount it horizontally as you have or vertically and the milled out part goes under the rail for support yet allows you to lower the rail for thinner stock....at least that is how mine works...  Hope this helps....

I milled out the same area on the other end of the fence... so I can keep the Mitre gauge attached to the near side of the table and have the same thin fence functionality
