where can I find the "official" dimension for the required minimum guide rail overhang at the start of a 4 ft crosscut using a 55" guide rail? I know the information is out there but I can't remember where I saw it.

Maybe there is a dimension out there but I sure don't remember what it is.  It would probably differ based on the thickness of material in my mind.  I try to have the saw on the guide rail just enough to have the rear adjusting knob on the rail and then be able to plunge to cutting depth before the teeth contact the wood.  That way your saw can be fully up to your chosen speed before the teeth contact the work.

You can fudge the 10 inch rule on the TS55 for 4x8 sheets -- though the bias on the overhang should be at the front of the cut.  The 55" rail is just long enough to do full cross cuts on sheet goods.  You run into problems with the TS75, though, due to the longer saw body and larger blade.

thanks to all of you for the quick responses - I should have started by poking around looking for a Supplemental Manual in the first place. I'll print one out and spiral bind for a permanent place in my shop.
"Squeaking by" is the right description using the 55" rails to cross cut a 48" sheet. But since it is the "standard" rail sold with the saw I want to base my next steps on that condition. I'll start shopping for a 75" Guide Rail so I have fewer anxious moments with 4x8 sheet crosscutting.
This forum is a priceless resource!

...

I am using a 1.6m rail (~63"), and it is comfortable. 55" seems to be on the hairy edge.

Having a firm two handed grip on the saw I start the saw and wait for it to get up to speed before I plunge. That way you can easily use the standard 55" rail to cut 48" stock.

the two-handed plunge is what I've been doing with my 55" rail but it is not a good feeling.  The idea of a 63" rail is interesting as it suggests someone just cut a longer rail to a more suitable length - a thought which also crossed my mind and now haas gained momentum..
HOLMZ: what led you to a 63" guide rail length?
When I get my 75" rail I may well decide to cut it down to 63" so it's perfect for 4x8 sheet crosscuts. I find excess / unneeded guide rail length very cumbersome in the shop and limiting my movement around the overhanging length..

Garry: which Guide Rails are completely interchangeable with FESTOOL?

Completely? None.

As far as I know (and I hasten to say not from personal experience so your mileage may vary) you can run Festool tools on Makita tracks, but not make use of all of the Festool accessories for tracks. But Makita tools work on Festool tracks.

Again, as far as I know, you can't use Festool tools on the Bosch/Mafell rails, but you can use Bosch/Mafell on the Festool rails.

Someone else may have better/more authoritative information on what you can and can't do hopefully, but that's about the limit of my knowledge with regards to this.

Garry - your listing is a good start to fill in gaps in my knowledge of FESTOOL compatibility with other brands. I'll take a closder look at the other brand rails as I can get my hands on them

I believe the Bosch/Mafell rails are 1.6M - there are no Festool rails at that size.

Bingo ...Bosch

[member=59331]Klemm[/member] - I used a jig saw jigsaw to cut one of the Bosch rails for the MFT, which I think was ~1100.
(A 2700 rail would give you 1100 and 1600) Then kiss it with a file, and whack a plastic end on it.
I had a remnant of ~500-mm, but I normally use a mitre-angle job for doing a poorman's HKS
