Modified UG Kapex Extension

I was in my local Festool Dealer today checking out the UG stand and extensions.  I currently have the Kapex MFT and am shop based so really don't have the need for the cart, nor do I want to spend the money.  However, the extensions are really nice and beefy when compared to the Kapex Extensions, non-UG version.  Also, they are less expensive.  I would much prefer these but they are too tall.  Has anybody attempted to cut them down, or modify them to work without the cart.  I guess I am attempting to mimic the Sawhelper setup using the MFT Kapex as the platform and the UG extensions as the material supports.  Any suggestions?

I thought the cart and Kapex MFT were the same height - is that not the case?  I believe you can slide the tube out and cut it down if you needed to make it shorter, but I would confirm that the heights are indeed different first.

the height of the kapex table is 32 1/16,
the UG stand height is 35 7/16.
So I doubt they will work well together

They are designed to work on the Kapex mounted to the cart or the MFT/Kapex. Or you can mount them directly to your MFT/3to give you a longer stop location.  Very versatile.

I can attest that they work on both as I have both and have set them up on both!  Unless you've modified the height MFT/3 Kapex stand, then they'll work. They are very nice!

Maybe the "bed" of the Kapex is 35 7/16" when mounted on the UG stand.

Thanks Builderbob!  I did not inspect the legs but for height adjustability, do they slide out and in within themselves?  How do you shorten them?

They don't slide within themselve. You can adjust them laterally so that they are perfectly level with the Kapex bed (or MFT/3) using the knob on the side --the adjustment range is somewhat marginal, though. If you want something permanent, you could get rid of the legs entirely and install the extensions on a DIY table of some sort, just like that: Finally mounted my Kapex

i would imagine that the foot comes off and you could cut the leg.
id rather leave them as is  and make a box etc for the saw to sit on to raise it up

Just unscrew the leg, like Lambeater did in the link I provided . What's with that bizarre need to take a saw to an expensive piece of kit when you don't need to?

just noticed --the legs attach to the extensions through a plate thingy that not only is the height of the Kapex, but has the necessary holes to bolt the whole thing solidly to a supporting table or what-have-you. No need to drill holes in the UG to convert them to a permanent solution. No drilling, no sawing --sad!

That is the height of the Kapex bed as well as the height of the MFT/3

I don't understand why they are too tall for your Kapex mounted on MFT/Kapex.  That is exactly what they were designed to fit on.

I just got a Kapex this week and was looking at the UG extensions for stock support and the stops. This thread answered the questions I had about if they worked on the MFT Kapex.  I wasn't sure as Festool lists the regular MFT as the same height as the UG stand.

I plan on using the saw in my shop so I don't need it to be mounted to a portable stand. Is there an advantage to buying a MFT/Kapex instead of the UG stand?  I did notice there was a price discount when the stand and extensions were bought together.

If not moving it a lot, the MFT/Kapex is a good option IMHO.  I find I use the small MFT for all kinds of things when I do not need to use the Kapex.  The extension wings work great too. I like having some room to stack parts as I cut and the MFT gives me some space as do the extensions.

The MFT/Kapex is a handier size to carry and fit in a restrictive space when you don't need the big one.  I went with the MFT/Kapex and UG extensions even though I do take the Kapex to  worksites.  The UG stand would  not have been useful for me since it would need to be dismounted  (the saw) to fit under my truck cover, and I rarely seem to have a site that rolling it would be practical anyway.

Sounds like this is a good setup.  At the time I started this post the Fastcap setup for Kapex was not available.  Has anybody any thoughts on the UG extensions vs. the Fast cap setup for Kapex?  I am looking for the comparison using the Kapex/MFT.  Thank you!
