Musclechuck on Festool OF1010?

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has used a Musclechuck Type 2 or E2 on a festool OF 1010 router?

It says in the compatibility map that it should fit...

Someone with experience who can share before I buy?

No I didn't Michael. I haven't really felt the need....until possibly now.  [smile]  [sad]

I may have to because 2 days ago while routing aluminum with the 1010, I had 3 instances where the vibration level generated by the milling, loosened the collet nut and ALMOST caused an oops. Last summer I also had several instances of the collet loosening when working with 80/20.

You never want to really wrench down on the collet but for aluminum routing there needs to be considerable force applied to it to prevent it from loosening.

The Musclechuck is supposed to provide twice the slip resistance to a router bit compared to a conventional tightened collet.

The nut is trying to tell you something. I don’t know the nature of your cut but if it is a slot at full  width you need to take shallower cuts. If you are taking a deeper cut with the cutter along an edge like a profile cut you need to take less per pass.

Hey Greg, it's a brand new Amana aluminum router bit, 1/4" diameter, at full width into 6063 or 6061 and taking a 1/8" deep cut.

I did some similar stuff last summer using a SGS carbide end mill and figured that the nut loosening campaign was because it was an end mill designed for general usage so I thought the greater helix angle of a designed for aluminum cutter would eliminate the issue.

As you know from being around metal cutting, full width cuts are the ones most likely to induce chatter. If the collet nut is loosening it makes me think you also have some chatter. Is that the case? 1/8 depth seems pretty aggressive for a small spindle like the 1010 but I can’t know without hearing what it sounds like. I assume you are gripping enough of the shank to cover the collet ID full length. If you don’t have enough shank in the collet that sets up the condition you
describe. Forgive me if you already know these things and have controlled for them but I would not expect the nut to loosen without chatter or a short grab on the shank. Whether a MuscleChuck solves this I could not say.

I think the compatibility list is wrong. The 1010 collet won't fit in a 1400 so it makes no sense to me that a collet that fits the 1400 (the MuscleChuck) could also fit the 1010. At the very least it would have to be a different model, methinks.

Both routers can accept 8mm collets but the 1400 can also accept a 1/2” (12+mm) collet so it’s seems obvious that an adapter made to fit the 1400 would not fit the smaller router.
