I love the design.
I hate sanding.
But the ultimate moment is applying Danish Oil ... with that delicious smell ... and watching the wood come to life.

Hadn't seen this poll before.  I dislike stock prep.

It is the step(s) in between concept, design, planning and thinking.... and actually doing woodwork.

Here's a metaphor to illustrate my view of it:  Going to a movie theater show
Step 1:  Looking forward to it, getting excited, finding out info, planning
Step 2:  Buy tickets and go to the toilet.  Find a seat.
Step 3:  Enjoy the movie-- the show, the story, the popcorn, blah blah.  At the end you at least have the satisfaction of being done, even if it was a waste of time or a disappointment.

... Guess which step is akin to stock prep?  [wink]

Clean-up doesn't bother me; I know I'm done at that point.  Finishing is just tedious, especially when I find a dog hair in the finish.

[crying]

Nickao,

Why don't you like cleaning up???  Look at all the unopened forgotten tools you found this week!

hehe

If you saw my shop you would slap me. It is a nightmare and I just do not want to clean it up. I would like to pay a helper to do it, but I have never found anyone that could do a nice job.

I guess all next week I will continue on. Most of the tools were found in my backup space, the formal living room!

I will entertain offers on anything I have in the classified ads. make me an offer, everything guaranteed 30 days.

I will clean your shop up for free...I'll come over, you take the wife shopping, I'll be gone when you get back.  I guarantee it will be clean!!!    [wink]

No way. I would post pics, but it may create havoc. It will take at least 3 - 8 hours days to get the place in order and fine tuned and putting everything in its place. I never get 8 hours non stop work, especially now with the kids home for break.  :)

If you want to give it a go I am all for it though!

Surely the least favourite part is correcting the mistakes?

Richard.

I don't know about you, but my projects are a series of mishaps(not mistakes) and me hiding each one and then building upon them until the project is complete.  ;)

Tom,

We're talking spotless!!!  [laughing]

Actually when I'm in the middle of a project and start spending more time looking for my tools, I stop and put everything away and clean up, then go back to my project.  I can't stand searching for tools and tripping over myself.  I don't have one of those pristine clean shops at all, but it isn't all cluttered up either.

I'm surprised so many of us hate finishing.  It's one of my favorite things.  This is true especially since I got my 4 stage turbine sprayer.  Makes a complete novice/idiot like me look like I know what I'm doing!  Boy, do I have them fooled!  Stock prep is my thing.  What a waste of time.  For .20 a b/f, my local supplier will S2S my lumber for me.  Well worth it.  All I have to do is some light sanding and it's ready for finish.

I'm with Richard... correcting mistakes.  It seems the more utilitarian a project is, the more likely I'll screw something up just because it isn't particularly interesting in the first place.  I'm thinking about the laundry-room cabinets I messed up today.  All fixed, but that's not the interesting part.
