My xl has landed

In the video JMB posted in post #14 above  , it shows three trays  across in a Sys - II. So six would go in a Sys- IV.

JMB, I had not watched the video in the "First Look " thread , video downloads are really slow for me.

And cut your own length Dominos !

Should come in handy when you want to give a piece of furniture some visual interest by using pairs of through-tenons.  I'm busy planning my next few Quickie-Mart robberies so I'll have the cash ready by the time UL approves it for the states.

John

sorry seth didnt cop that in the vid the first time round

Right had bit of play over the weekend. This not really a review, not used in anger yet and only one cutter is very limiting.
Size comparison.

First peculiar find. Material depth stop to right of fence doesn't half depth on fence.
Xl set at 40mm material.

Domino df 500 material depth set up.

Xl 12mm x 70mm plunge on right and df500 max wiggle with 10mm cutter, think was 33mm wide x 28mm deep.
12mmx100mm domino and diy 10mmx33mmx54mm long.

Xl used as intended. Bed rail test.

Fly's through douglas fur 12mm to depth 70mm no problem but left a bit of dust in the mortice. Could be the gummy DF though.
12mmdoubledominoforbedrail.jpg

Post to rail on bed no problem.
bedraildominoed.jpg

Hand rail onto newel mortices. Handrail going up 42.5 deg staircase. For top of stairs cut handrail at 47.5 deg by setting mitresaw at 42.5 deg.
Reference of bottom of handrail, domino in handrail first. Domino fence set at 47.5 deg. Domino fence depth set at 15mm
dominoinghandrailgoingupstairs.jpg

Stick domino in to measure distance from centre of domino to bottom edge of handrail. Use measure and subtract base to centre 15mm leaves 4mm that fence must be above bottom of handrail mark. Clamp square and use bottom of domino base to reference mortice.

Offer up handrail or better still cut spindle to correct height to get bottom of handrail position.

Bottom newel and handrail mortising. Round top handrails need support for domino fence.

Again use domino to find centre of mortice from bottom of handrail.
usingdominoforcentretogetfenceposition.jpg

Use measure to mark domino position on newel. Bottom pencil line is bottom of handrail, little mark is actual centre of mortise and the line squared between is 15mm from centre of mortice which is where you clamp square for base of machine reference from. Domino xl cutter has 15mm base to centre of cutter. I mark the square with centre of mortice to line up with centre mark on base of domino machine.

100mmx 12mm dominoes used with 30mm going into handrail and 70mm in newel.

Sweet!  [thumbs up]

How do you like the pins and how is the overall balance and weight of the machine?

To be honest at first i wasn't overly impressed, learning curve needed. Seems awkward at first and quite cumbersome defiantly needs material to be firmly clamped so both hands can be on domino, just weight. But saying all this I then picked up my smaller df 500 and it feels very rough compared to the smoothness of the xl.  I not over keen on paddles/pins but this domino is prominently design for rails and the like so close domino positioning with these pins should be useful.
