I'm not familiar with the CNC step, but I thought you might want to check out ShopBot.... The machines are great and customer service is awesome.   We have a 4' x 8' it can carve almost anything we throw at it.

4'X8' is much larger than I need for my intended applications.  The CNC-Step units are smaller, faster, and within the size limits I've set for my uses.  Kress milling motor is also German and excellent.

For more info on these CNC machines, visit: CNC-Step Germany Site in English

Frank

This brings up a very interesting philosophical question:  Is it better to buy as many tools as possible just in case they might need to use them someday or is it better to buy a piece of equipment when coming up hard against a present need?  I've done it both ways and am still trying to figure it out

I'm much more in the "might need" column.  For one thing, having the tools at hand may spark the imagination and allow for the creation of projects that you might not otherwise have considered.

Second, we all know that prices continue to rise. There is a strong feeling that inflation in the U.S. is likely to raise its ugly head again in the not so distant future, and the dollar could collapse at any time due to reasons not allowed to be discussed on this forum, and that would make foreign manufactured products just that much more costly.

Third, there is a certain comfort in knowing that you have the tools at hand to tackle virtually any project...without delay. That can be a real benefit when urgency is required.

Finally, there is the need to feed the addiction. 'Nuff said! [embarassed]

Cheers,

Frank

Well, I'm jealous. I had a feeling you'd be the first if not one of the first to have a PDC drill in North America.

Hopefully I'll be in the top 100.

The feelings of many of us may be expressed in a jealous cry.

But - congratulations on your 'retirement'  Frank. Looking forward to many more reports on the Elf workshop and those first projects.

Best wishes,

Stephen

Whoa!  Hold on there dude!! [scared]
I ain't retiring just yet. Give me another 8-10 years! (Dang people trying to push me to the grave... [eek])  (But thanks for the wishes!)

Just leaving Germany because my Air Force Spouse has been assigned a Senior Command at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia.  Currently here in Deutschland getting our stuff ready for the military to move my household goods. It was supposed to be a three year Germany assignment, but cut short by a year when my spouse was selected for a senior command position.

The nice thing is that it will only be a 5-6 hour drive between our Florida home and where she will be assigned for the next two years.... and in the same time zone! I'm damn tired of logging half of my six-week breaks from work in Nigeria spending time with family in Germany, and then a jet-lag inducing trip back to the U.S. to take care of the house for another couple of weeks before once again enduring the body-breaking 30 hour-long trip back to work in Nigeria. (Melbourne,FL to Atlanta, to Paris, to Abuja, to Port Harcourt.... all in cattle class. Ugh!)  Having said that though, time in Germany under military sponsorship meant having the ability to purchase all these NAINA Festool items, and without having to pay VAT (Value Added Taxes)!  [tongue]

Retiring?  Not anytime soon unless I win the Powerball Lottery! [big grin]

Cheers,

Frank

And hopefully with a military discount or consideration as well?

Not having to pay the German 19% VAT on purchases IS the consideration! [tongue]
My dealer also took care of me a bit. They were always VERY happy to see me walk in the door!! [drooling]

BTW... do you want those two systainers?

Cheers,

Frank

My apologies Frank, I must have taken the following statement too literally![size=12pt]

"I confess that beyond just trying to outfit my shop with the best I can find into retirement..... I can be realistically called one of those whacko "preppers", and not ashamed of it."  [size=11pt]

But enjoy those tools anyway. Looking fwd to more reports.  [smile]

For such a collection can say only one thing:

!!! CONGRATULATIONS !!!

It seems that no consideration of improvements will not hinder your work.
Great.

[thumbs up]

Hey Frank.
We are all just jealous!! [not worthy] [not worthy] [drooling]
Thanks for a great idea..I'm selling all subsequent tool purchases to the wife along these lines..."come the revolution gold, silver and cash will be worthless but the ability to process, fabricate and join pieces of timber will be priceless, therefore darling we should invest in our future now (passes 2014 catalogue)... [tongue]

The only thing missing off that boom arm is an AI.. [poke]

Good luck in the move and congrats to the better half on the new post.

I can't wait to see the end result(s)
