We released a couple more 8mm shank bits yesterday...with a particular focus on Shaper Origin. We now make 12mm and 16mm Clearing and Pattern Bits. Both include pattern bearings which are easily removable. For Origin work these are great to clear out pockets for inlays. In a hand-held traditional router they can cut to a template or extend the depth of a pocket.

Great value Jeff, thanks for taking the leap on 8mm. Since I was amongst those who prodded you, seems like I'm morally obligated to buy them...

Rationalization... [thumbs up]

My favorite side-benefit of the 8mm experiment is the boss bought an Origin, handed it to me and told me to figure out how to use it and what bits we can sell for it.  [big grin]

Thanks for the heads-up Jeff... [smile]

I've been looking at purchasing the Shaper 16mm x 16mm x 8mm clearing bit but the $160 price tag always prevented me from pushing the button. I understand the pricing because it's solid carbide, most of which is turned to carbide dust. For my projects it was a nice to-have item, not a must-have item. However, the Woodpecker bit at $55 along with free shipping...well...it just found a new home.  [big grin]

Can the bearing be removed/replaced?

Couldn't help but notice, it's EXACTLY the same size as the Shaper version including having 3-flutes.  [tongue]

The bearing comes off in about 3 quick seconds. It will take you longer to find the right hex key than it will to take it off (it's tiny).

Our brazed head bits are a game-changer when it comes to spiral cutting geometry without grinding away $40 worth of carbide.

Great, I just ordered one of each.

AH, now I see the braze. Makes a ton of sense.

Do you manufacture the blanks in house?

Yep. It's pretty fascinating. This contraption they go in has a 3/4" long, 1/2" dia. solid chunk of carbide cherry red in about 5 seconds. I wanted to shoot a video of it, but Rich says the process is not widely known, so he would prefer to not teach our competitors how to do it.

Jeff, congrats on the new tooling and the new tool! Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with but the 16mm bit is certainly the low hanging fruit so it should be very popular.

The 16mm bit is shipped for free.
If I buy both the 16 and the 12mm bits and have them shipped together will the shipping still be free?

Sadly, until a software update that has been in development for close to a year is finally finished, the system will add shipping on the second bit. Don't know if a phone order would allow reason to intervene, but it might be worth a shot.

Agreed 100% and put in my order too. I have a Shaper 16mm already, so I went for the 12mm. It's great to see another choice for 8mm shanks and since it comes with the bearing, it will work with the OF1010 too.

Ditto. The Boss wanted something to put under the tree so why not, win-win.

Seriously though, kudos on taking the leap. I'd imagine it's not as trivial an investment of resources as we might think.

I think that's what they called it. I'll check.

It has to be Jeff...nothing else is capable of that.

I took a different tack. I ordered a 2-pack of the 16mm x 16mm bits because of the free shipping. Knowing full-well that if I ordered a single bit, but if I trashed the bit accidentally, I'd have to order another bit for the full price and also pay for shipping. A two-for seemed like cheap insurance. Besides, one bit will have the collar & bearing removed and will reside with the Shaper, while the 2nd bit will reside with the 1010 & 1400.

It would be nice to have an option to buy both 12 and 16 mm bits at a special price, or at least free shipping.

I think the free shipping issue will loom larger in the minds of buyers as we move forward. I'm somewhat sensitive to the purchase price of equipment but I'm 2x-3x more sensitive to the shipping prices of that same equipment. Why does a 2 oz/$5 item from Zoro cost $15 to ship?

For better or for worse, Amazon has done wonders to resolve this issue.

I recently listened to a podcast with Josh Silverman from Etsy and in it, he mentioned how Etsy has been convincing sellers to bake shipping into the price with the appearance of free shipping.

Obviously, shipping is never free, but the rationale was that the consumer doesn't want any shipping surprises when going through checkout.

Amazon's influence in this was also discussed.

I stopped using McMaster when everything had a $15 handling fee added in addition to another ~$15 actual shipping. Twenty bucks worth of screws suddenly cost $50.

Decided this was thier intent, they really didn't want the business at that scale.
