We usually end up doing a bunch of trial and error with HVLP. For each product, you can mess with reduction, tip size and your own technique to figure out what gives you the best results.
My advice to your friend would be to check out either the ProShot 2 or the TrueCoat Pro 2. They are very similar. The bottom line is that its best to get a model that has the pressure control system.
after experimenting a bit, the orange peel goes away with a 1.5MM tip, no reduction.
i ended up painting galvanized conduit this weekend with some BEHR primer/latex combo glop
that shot excellently with a 2.0 tip, unreduced. it was a consistency somewhere between
bondo, and pool gunite. [unsure] so, it seems i can apply quite thick material with reasonable
success.
as many have said however, it's not gonna go fast.... however, i can apply finish well with this,
and something that has to be considered for the novice finisher is that there is no equipment
where i'm gonna come out ahead with something that is above my skill level to use, 'cause it's
faster.
and if i have to sand out blemishes in the finish and redo it a second time, well, the slowest
hvlp in the world is still faster than the fastest sandpaper.
thanks for taking the time to reply here.
