New domino looks used

Hi folks,

I just bought a new DF 500 Q-plus.
Taking it out of the systainer, it appears to have a small amount of sawdust on the cutter, a small amount of sawdust fell out the dust port. There is still a plastic film on the bottom face. Otherwise it looks in new condition.

I've gotta assume this was used once and returned.

Curious if there's anything specific i should look for to make sure its in good shape and wasn't damaged. It would be a large hassle for me to return this.

It may not have been returned, if it was shipped from a store to you it's quite possible the staff may have just showed a customer how it works by doing a test plunge. A lot of our tool shops here in OZ will do that with stock.

Even the Lamello Zeta I recently sold a kidney to buy looked like it had been demoed.

That or QA isn't bothering to clean up after themselves anymore.  From the sounds of recon purchases, I think that's the case.

I don't know of any Festool dealership here in the Canadian city where I live that would open a brand new Festool tool, use it for a quick demo and then put it back for sale as a new stock. I'm pretty sure no proper store management would allow that to happen as a store policy. Every Festool showroom here (4 to 6) I've been to has dedicated demo machines for such purposes.

I suggest that you make inquiries with the seller and ask why you found saw dust in your machine first.

Originally every Domino was supposed to go thru an actual test cut at the factory to ensure it was calibrated correctly.  I have no idea if that still happens, but if it does, that could explain the dust if it wasn't cleaned up properly afterwards.

If I were in your position I wouldn't worry about because after 5 minutes it would probably look worse.  But that is just me of course.

Snip..

If that accounted for what happened to the OP's machine, I'd venture to suggest that for that particular test, dust extraction wasn't used or the dust extractor/hose didn't function properly during the test.

Out of years and years of use of my DF500 with dust collection, there was only one time that a bit of sawdust was found remaining in the dust port due to a blockage in the CT15 (https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/festool-tool-problems/blocked-ct-15/msg701441/#msg701441)

When I bought my df500 last fall I wondered the same thing.  New unit, everything else looked unused and clean.  Domino itself also looked clean and unused, but the tip of the cutter had a bit of sawdust.

Never got confirmation either way (no way to verify), but my guess is factory testing/calibration.  I say that as the shop I ordered from did have plenty of demo Festool tools on display (including both dominos) and warranty registration went fine.
