New festool owner - question about "demo/display" units

Last month while on a road trip back East to help an eldery relative with some home repairs, I stopped at a dealer after deciding to start my festool collection and to try out on some of the repairs since dust was a concern. I sprung for a router and a vacuum, paid full price but there was a package discount of $100 or something.  After paying, I found out they were giving me the demo units. I didn't have time or energy to argue but I was unhappy.

What have people seen in this regard, is festool not making enough money that they can't give dealers a "super discount" for demo unit which they then keep on display and give customers new, boxed units?  I thought that was normal procedure for most companies - dealers get 1 at an above normal discount schedule for display. Before I go to local dealers for anything else, I wanted to check if this is a common occurrence.

Also, where can I find a list of parts that I should have received in the router?

Thanks for any feedback.

I don't think that they are allowed to sell demo/display units.Unless maybe it's a discontinued model.
I would get my money back and go somewhere else.

Dealers are not allow to sell the demo units.  I'd suggest you promptly return the items if you are unhappy.  There are plenty of good Festool dealers out there.  What router did you get, you can visit the Festool USA website to check on the included contents but they don't always list every item.  I'm sure one of the members can give a complete list of the contents.

BTW, welcome to the forum.

I think that this situation is highly unusual.  I would have to ask if the tools were demo or the display models.  There is a difference to me.  I have no knowledge of the Festool dealer agreements etc.  I know one of my local dealers a few years ago would loan you a tool while you were waiting for yours to come in.

If I were in your shoes if I were not comfortable I would contact the dealer and try to address this issue directly.  You do have the right to return within 30 days.

Regarding what comes with a router, we would need to know what router you purchased.  The contents vary based on model.

The dealer you did business with should not have sold a demo unit unless it was specifically a discontinued tool.  The only router that I could imagine they might have that would be discontinued would be the OF 2000.

Please email me at sho@festoolusa.com and I will be happy to help you resolve the situation to your satisfaction and address any concerns with the dealer.  Be sure to provide your contact information and the dealer with whom you did business.

My apologies for the negative purchasing experience, especially considering this is your first Festool purchase.  I assure you this is not the norm and we take this very seriously.

I have a big feeling he meant the Footstools sitting there on display and not actual demo's. Who in their right mind would by a machine that has been run by tons of people for full price.

Clarification question, Shane - or others -

IS there ANY Festool that does not come in its own systainer? A CT, for example?  What about the collection of Domino chippies?  Sandpaper?  But as far as tools themselves go?

All tools with the exception of SysPorts, CTs, MFTs, C12 Industrial Packages (multiple drills, batteries, etc.), OF 2000 Basic, MFK 700 Basic, and Kapex come with a systainer.  Accessories and consumables such as  Domino tenons, sandpaper, etc. do not come in systainers, however some of these items have systainers specifically designed for them but they are sold separately.

PS - Dealers feel free to add if I overlooked something that is not normally included with a Systainer.

Recently I was in the US to attend a course and I went to a Festool dealer to pick up an MFT. The dealer told me the only one he had left was the MFT that had been setup in the demo area. It was in excellent condition so it could not be called a demo but I was reluctant to buy it because the packaging had been disposed of and I had a fair distance to travel. There was no discount available.

I am sure others would have snapped up the display model without a second thought but it didn't seem worth it to me. The good news is I finally bit the bullet and ordered one yesterday.

I know that my local woodcraft sold the display/demo Kapex to some guy because he needed it that day.

That guy was Amish, so I really could care less if they screwed him over, me and the Amish have been going round this year. [mad]

I need to correct my previous statement and my apologies for not being up to speed on all of the policies for dealers.  Dealers can sell a display unit, if they so choose and the customer is satisfied with the condition of the unit.  Some dealers use their regular inventory as display units.

Thanks for all the replies - just to clarify, it was an OF 1400 and it did come with the systainer but it had a post-it note on it that said "display" and what I would describe as "wood dust" on it in some places, in the screw heads, for instance. It should be fine.

I am going to try to let it go and not worry about it - serenity now!

Again, someone correct me if I'm missing something but the OF 1400 should come with:

1/2" collet
1/4" collet
8mm collet
Dust extraction hood (clear plastic that attaches and envelopes the bit)
Dust extraction chip catcher (black plastic that swivels and attaches to the bottom of the router)
Guide rods (2)
Plug-it power cord
Guide bushing adapter
Manual
Systainer 4

Edit: Collet wrench (1)

And an OF 1400 Router [big grin]

I don't know about you guys, but if I would definitely not buy an MFT that came in a Systainer.  No way!  [tongue]

Richard,

Was this the newer MFT/3, or was it an MFT 1080?

Well, you got your answer, as far as America goes. However, in Europe it is possible to also buy most tools without systainer, so don't get confused when sometimes people here talk about not having a systainer with their tool.
