new festool pre separator

hi guys,

could anyone give any insight as to why the new pre separator isn't compatible with the ct midi? as i have one i made into a box with a dust commander and seems to work well.

I believe it has to do with the distance from the input of the separator and the input of the vacuum. I asked this question and apparently that distance is fixed.
 
so if i used my hose i have for my pre separator  have already which is slightly longer it would work? or hole saw a hole through the black plastic at the top back of the extractor it would work? or are you saying the hose needs to be a fixed length?

My guess is only because the angled connector on the MIDI is not in the front and is located in the back of the hose garage. The length of the fixed hose from the separator will not reach and also not angled to fit on the MINI/MIDI. To say that it is not compatible however isn't fully accurate(I believe) and can be fixed with a DIY made extension like I have on my MIDI, I created a small extension of 36mm hose with the "Y" adapter for 2 hoses in my shop. This puts the hose connector in the front, the perfect area like the other 26/36/46 Vacs and should work not problem with the separator. Hopefully I am correct, I would love to get one for my midi!

have you got any pics of your y setup? have you got blast gates on it also?
 
No blast gates just the standard festool Y adapter for 2 hoses. There is a cap included so I just remove the blue hose and cap it, then I add my festool hose to the other side. Easy quick swap since I have my blue 36mm hose connected to a boom arm with the new clean tech braided hose at end. Pics here...

Since blue hoses don't seem to be standard (at least I know them only in green) and you already have the connector sleeve on the short hose (that goes into the vac): why not make that one a bit longer and only use the sleeve (without the Y thing)?
 
I did not mean that it "could not work" , just that it was not compatible out of the box. As any member of the FOG knows, we will make everything work with everything, no matter what the barriers. :)

I use the Y adapter to attach another festool hose for dual sanding operation( 2 people) and also since the blue hose (bosch 35mm anti-static) is permanently attached to a boom arm with a new cleantec braided hose on the boom. This gives me roughly 24 ft of hose. This allows me to use this bigger hose diameter for all MFT/3 cutting with my TS75 and router/sanders. I often will attach the old style hose to the Y adapter and plug the boom arm hose connection so I can vacuum and clean up the shop etc.
 
I do something similar to Grainhaus.  I too have a 36mm Bosch hose that stays on a boom arm at my large cutting table.  I bought the covered Festool hose with integral plug and replaced the vac end of the hose and installed a tool end to make a double ended hose.  When I need the smaller hose for sanding or more length, i just plug the end into the 36mm tool end.
 
Thanks for all your replys. So their not comparable is purely down to the hose connection for the midi being at the back.

The information from Festool USA is that it is not compatible with the CT SYS / MINI / MIDI models. So, for now, the official word stands that it's not compatible with the smaller vacs.

A proper cyclone has a 3:1 height:diameter ratio which reduces static pressure loss and aids in separation. That's why the DD is so tall. Clearly the CT Separator doesn't have that, so what's in the top of the CT Separator? Is it more like a Thien Baffle design?

[member=64037]guitarchitect[/member], thanks for the question. We have not received samples or inventory yet since this product doesn't officially launch for another 2+ months. Here's an image showing the inside of the cyclone, which may help answer your question. I know it doesn't show much, but hopefully we'll get more details soon. Based on the photo, it certainly could be a Thien baffle design.
