I never got to try them but, to me, they looked like a design from 20 years ago. Saying that, I've never been a fan of Festool drills or drivers. in 2020, I was expecting more from Festool, a lot more actually.
So what exactly is it that changed so much the last 20 years, that Festool drills don't have?
Because my T15 is 12 years old now, and it is still the best drill on the market.
Batteries are way too big, and many of the drill bodies too long, I know that some can have angled attachments etc, as an all day every day user, I just want something I can pickup and used in all situations. The LED’s aren’t anything special either.
I have other makes of drill/drivers that have built in anti kick back, total torque control and many other features that Festool seem to have over looked.
I love most of the Festool range but, just don’t rate their drills, cordless or mains, never have. Similarly, I don’t like Metabo drills either.
I have a vast amount of drills and drivers of all types, they get used in every sense of the word, every day, and on site usually all day. We have been lucky to have had no issues at all with drills, only replacing batteries when the time comes. When we upgrade, our old drills are still working perfectly.
Why would I try and fix a problem that doesn’t exist, going to a product I’m not over excited about.
When I look and hold even the latest Festool drills, they resemble and feel like drills I was using 15-20 years ago.
I spoke to two Festool reps at a tool fair last year, they asked me if I would take part in a survey in exchange for a goody bag. I agreed and would have done so without the goodies.
So, we got to the survey which was mainly drills. My comments were on the same lines as I have made here.
One if the guys was reading my notes as the other put a goody bag together.
I said no offence but, these are my thoughts, and show him I wasn’t a Festool basher, I showed him my Festool warranty list of tools, which adds up to a lot of money.
He said no problem, and told me half of the survey that day and from other days, listed the dislikes I mentioned. He said it helps them develop tools that are what people like and need. So I was a bit surprised to see the latest offerings. Sure there may well be people that love them, or even buy them because they will look no further than Festool.
I meet many Festool owner users on sites, and when any conversation gets to drills, they tell me how great they are. Some of them have never used anything but Festool drills, so you could say this is total faith in a product, or you could say, they don’t know any different as they have never dared buy a tool without a Festool badge on it, and are in no position to judge or compare.
Most of the power tools I buy now, are Festool or Mafell, simply because any employees I of mine, have and prefer to use their own tools, apart from an apprentice. Which is how it should be.
Many of them, have a lot of Festool kit, one who does the majority of kitchen fitting, has just about every tool Festool ever made, including many drills, he loves them!
Each to their own eh? [wink]
