New Header Images

Hey Matt -

Those are NOT my work - I grabbed them from Fine Woodworking as examples - so we don't have rights to use them.

I did include images in this thread that are my work - as attachments - message 24 in the thread.

OK, thanks!  I have the images you posted in message #24.

If anyone else want to submit images for the forum headers, post them here as attachments.

Stay in touch,
Matthew

Everyone,
If anyone here has experience designing images of the type needed for this forum, please say so here, or send me a message offline!

I'm not a graphics person, and I'm having a hard time getting the new images to look at clean and professional as the ones we use now.  I have high standards for the look of this forum, and I don't want to have the header images (our identity) look unprofessional.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Matthew

I've played with the member pictures in a new header with poor results so far so I tried something else. Here's a new series, let me know what you think.

Frank I like your pictures and others project pics better. Brice they are nice but to generic. They do not give a homey tight nit feeling I believe this forum has.

Just my opinion.

Nick, I agree they don't pop. The current images don't either, however, they do have more color.

The problem I've run into with the images members have posted are numinous. They're not a good size to edit and the quality isn't the greatest. That's not meant as an insult, the images used in the current header are professionally shot and edited before they were used to make the header. I'm still working on using photographs as the images in a new header.

Here's one of the issues I've run into with pictures of members in the header, cut off head! This happens to be a high resolution picture of me. The quality of the pic is pretty good except the head gets cut off in the header. Please if anyone has a good pic to use in the header let me know. Oh, what do you think of the layout in these headers?

Put your head back on!

Yes the header shape is hard to deal with for sure.

I like these much better and the layout is great for the restriction we have on the header size.

Can the header shape be modified it would make it simpler?

Since the height is only 125 pixels it's pretty hard to scale the picture to get my head in the shot and still be able to see I'm using a Festool tool. Maybe it's better to not have anyone's face showing in the header(s), what do you think of that?

Yes if would be better for an image in the header but it would likely take up too much space on the page. So, I guess I'd say keep the header the same size it is now.

Well I would not mind seeing woodshopdemos assistants faces in the pictures!

One more with my head. This will give you an idea of the scale I'm talking about to fit a whole person, or at least most of me, in the header image.

If Festool is worried about "confusion" they should check the most recent Woodcraft flyer.  They had a full page dedicated to Festool.  1st tool in a row of pictures was the 1080 not MFT 3.

At the time FOG first considered use of images lifted from Festool's websit or literature, I expressed concern in a cautionary note stating this could be a problem from a legal perspective, for a variety of reasons based in the intricacies and nuances of laws pertaining to trademarks, service marks, and copyright.  And the problems are exacerbated because the laws of many countries have to be considered in any actions or non-actions taken by Festool.  One of the core prinicples of USA trademark law (and that of many other industrialized countries) is that the owner must control use of its tradmarks, or risk losing them.  Another is that trademarks serve to identify a particular source and a particular quality for goods associated with the trademarks (and services associated with the service marks).  "Use it properly or lose it."  Similarly with copyrighted materials.  This could be a key underlying reason for Festool requesting the change.

But none of the above means that members of FOG are in any way prohibited from creating their own photographs of Festool products and using those properly within FOG.  Graphical re-creations of Festool's logo and such could be more of a problem.  Tradmark registrations are often based on submission of art work, as are copyright registrations.

It would not surprise me to learn that Festool would like FOG to add some sort of disclaimer to assure that members of the public who visit the FOG site are made aware that FOG is not officially part of or endorsed by Festool.

Good Morning,
I hope everyone is having a great holiday season!

I've spent several hours on this header image makeover in the past few days, and I'm not getting very far!  I like all the photos people have submitted, but the problem is that when they are placed in the current header design they just don't look quite right.

So, what I've decided to do is remove the photos altogether from the header area, and in place of the photos put in an original logo.

For the moment, the header will just have text, with open space where the photos currently appear.  Soon, I'll have a unique logo ready -- a graphic with "FOG" in it.  I'm working with a couple of designers on this.  Soon I will present all the logo candidates to the forum and we can decide which one we like best.

I'm sorry to members for this confusion.  But for now I want to remove the photos, as Festool requested this a while ago.

Stay in touch,
Matthew

PS: Remember, Festool has only said that the images are causing confusion.  They did not refer to copyright or other ownership issues.  My position has always been that the company has its internal reasons for asking me to do this, and rather than question it I see it as an opportunity to do something new for the forum.

Matthew,

My son does graphic design of logos and cartoon style illustration of children's books.  If you'll send me a PM with a starting graphic design you are interested in and your ideas for its modification, I'll get him to make up some designs for your consideration.  He has the full Adobe CS3 software on his iMac.

Good Morning,
The tool images are now gone from the forum header.  We now only have the text, and a space to the left awaiting a new logo.  I'm hoping to put a new logo in place within the next couple of weeks, but it might be significantly longer depending on how things go.

I'd be happy to see what he has to offer.  I'm working with a couple of logo designers to get something unique and interesting for the forum.

If other members want to design a logo and offer it up for consideration, please feel free to do so and post it here.

Anyway, for now we just have the words!

Thanks,
Matthew

Matthew,

Any update on this yet? Just curious, as I only just found this post. I haven't kept up to date with FOG for a while, but have started again in the last couple of weeks. TBH, until I read this post I hadn't even noticed that the pictures were missing....

Jonny,
I've left it alone, with just the name of the forum.  It actually looks all right.  Not as good as the rotating tool images perhaps, but still unique.
Perhaps one day we'll come back to the images.
Matthew
